    A New Year

    It’s time for change--
    To wipe the slate clean,
To move on from past mistakes,
    And start anew.

It sounds so good in principle--
    Reality is far different though.
    How to move on
When our past defines who we are?

    To welcome 2013
    With anticipation or apprehension?
    Another 365 days
Composed of the same or different--
The future we alone can forge.

beautiful. I can REALLY relate... almost feels like I wrote it.
"anticipation or apprehension" my favourite part which i can relate to. anticipation because I know I can shape the future apprehension because I also know it can end up just as bad as the last

I'm learning how to refuse to let my past mistakes define who I am - they are useful for self-awareness, and the feedback they give is motivation to find my real self - which I refuse to believe is the same person that made those mistakes.
They were made because of stuff I was telling myself - and I'm learning by grace to tell myself better stuff which is more true - and this is healing the past as well as bringing hope for the future. We don't have to be trapped by the past or the person we were in our past, that is the good news :) Great poem, btw!
