    The Moon

The world is such a terrible place.
I’d rather be on the moon right now,
    somewhere physically null
    and seemingly infinite,

and on that stale artisan fraction
    of the universe I’ll slam
    a flag into destiny
    like vocal dynamite

    so sharp, deep, and proud
    the stars will scream
    till the heavens go off
like an ambulance trucktop noise expenditure.

Up there on that desert rock
I’ll make peace on a planet
    for once, and obviously
not the same kind of peace we feign

    here on earth,
but an inner peace with tomes
written about it in the craters of
    my frozen tongue,

a scaly specimen from the tombs
    of furtive bliss—
    a rapture foaming off
    profound sullen grievances.
