Rest not my head upon your lap
To echo of the dripping tap
For the water comes only to drown
Upon our hollow skulls we rap

Do I have a soul my dear
    To see through the eyes
What is a soul my dear
If it leaves us when we die

    They came in the night
    Upon the water they walked
To tell us on the wall
    Where our names were chalked

Yes you have a soul my dear
That angry whisper at night you hear
Can I sell my soul oh dear
To that man for nothing near

You left it in the schoolyard
    Under the privet leaves
Where a seldom breath stings hard
    Beneath the willow trees
