abuse and patterns

my granfather used to hit my father and my aunt. He used to call her whore or whatever that came to his mind and he also hit her... a lot. My father sort of imitated his dad... he insulted my mum and also us and he used his hands sometimes too... once he even took a knife and theatened us and i still dont believe it it felt as if it was a movie. he doesnt live with us now, i cant hate him...
now i am worried that i treat like that my kids if i ever have them. are patterns that important in these cases that u cant avoid doing what ur parents did to u?

You do not have to follow what your parents did. You recognize that the abuse was wrong. You can break the cycle of abuse. It is a conscious choice you can make. You can start the new future
