I didn't realize I was supposed to know
    what's inside your head.
You are, after all, my offspring
    and one third my age,
which in itself is a chasm in comprehension.

I'm sorry that I seem to have forgotten
what it was like for my parents to not understand me,
except that I felt adolescently superior
    and misunderstood.
That's what was in MY head anyway.

I hope I haven't done you permanent damage
    over my failings.
I only ever meant to be
    understanding. Odd how I
    miscalculated.

    Mea maxima culpa

I feel that I'm the worst parent in the world. I wasn't brought up to be such a monster. I don't know what's happened to me but I don't like it. I'm a failure.

It's not you hun, well at least you are not alone in thinking that it is.
I loved your poem, it applies to me and my offspring too and one day it will apply with our grandchildren, then we would get our own back, if only we were around to see it!

I don't know how I could have come so far from what i vowed when I was a teen: I swore I"d understand my kids and be kind to them... now I seem to be the opposite of that. My good intentions have gone awry. How did I get so far from my dream??
