Is anybody here living a straight edge lifestyle or has any kind of information regarding it. I have been looking into it and would like to hear anybody’s personal experiences with it.

Just curious as to what a 'straight edge lifestyle' is exactly? Is it like being a straight shooter and doing everything good and moral?

Straight Edge refers to abstaining from drugs, including tobacco and alcohol, sometimes vegetarian and vegans diets and not having sex before marriage.

Basically its a wonderful term too give insecure people a group identity for maintaining the status quo.

How odd. I remember reading about people who called themselves "straight edge" way, way, way back in the mists of time, (1981 or 1982) during what I guess you'd now call the first generation of Punk.

    Nietzsche's eternal recurrance, anyone?

How on earth can you say that someone who identifies this way is necessarily 'insecure?' They might be, of course, but there's no particular reason they should be.

How does an individual's private decision to conduct themselves in a certain way related to things sexual, dietary and controlled substances have anything to do with the "status quo?"

Well the only real requirements to be "straight edge" are abstaining from drugs, everything else is optional and as such, when considering most straight edge kids aren't even old enough to legally drink or smoke anyway they simply are maintaining the regular order of things. By that logic my little sister is also straight edge.
And if someone really was secure in their identity then they would just accept, "hey, I don't put shit into my body, but I don't feel the need to belong to a group of other pretentious fucks and brag about it" like the rest of us do.

I dont do drugs and am veggie, but im just that way Ive never thought of myself as straight edge.
On a side note, putting a name to your lifestyle doesnt make you insecure, just like I say im agnostic, im vegetarian, I suffer such and such mental illness etc etc, its a word to describe my lifestyle, a piece of information thats all.

You've yet to meet any straight edge kids in person, its more than information.

I'm straight edge. Just a label I suppose.

Just no alcohol, drugs, tobacco, or casual sex. Some followers may choose to abstain from animal products ( vegan, vegetarianism) and caffeine as well.

Fair enough point to make, but Kids will usually find groups to go into, something that they identify with or want to be popular (or different) with being, be it emo, straight edge or (okay im not that up on current trends) etc, its somewhat normal for kids to do that im not sure why its any different from any other group, I also dont want to stereotype everyone because there are lots of people out there who chose that way and not be so obvious about it,. the argument people make about kids not being old enough to take drugs anyway so that kind of voids them of being straight edge isnt always true, kids of 13, and over (sometimes younger) take drugs, hell i had it shoved on me continually at that age, so there is still a decision to be made there whether or not to take it, whats legal age doesn't account for everything, just like the drugs and sex (underage) being illegal itself.

I was just wondering What do you think of straight edge adults? (which is the age group I had in mind in my first post, I admit wrongly forgetting the youth side of it)
I understand it was youth movement that emerged from the punk rock genre but not exclusively for them, There are men who used to be in gangs and did drugs then turning straight edge a little later in life, do you think they are insecure and brag about it too? maybe they are just putting a name to their lifestyle choices/changes.

Straightedge isn't a label, it's simply a way of living. As far as I'm concerned, it means no sex, no alcohol, and no drugs. Vegetarianism has little to do with it.

This doesn't answer either of my questions, and it also makes no sense. Last I checked declaring things illegal for certain groups hardly means they're all going to not do them.

Has she made a conscious decision to conduct herself in a certain fashion? I submit should would not be if she has not done so. As Robert Kennedy once put it, "It is not that I'm a saint, it is just that I've never had the opportunity to be a sinner."

I don't disagree with the possibility that some people might act this way, but every group that has ever existed seems to have at least a few of this sort, whether it is Christians, Socialists, Buddhists or whomever. But you seem to be stepping beyond this into the position that anyone who has ever termed themself a 'straight edge' is by definition a poseur. I see no reasonable basis for this conclusion and I therefore reject it. If I've misinterpreted your words, I apologize in advance.

When I was a kid, my parents joined this church that incorporated this sort of lifestyle into their belief system. It's probably not a bad idea but I just never got into denying myself the pleasures of living for the sake of getting maybe another couple of decades at the end of my life.

You can't hurt yourself by living healthy as long as you eat a balanced diet. If it appeals to you, go for it.

As far as drugs go, I wouldn't give a dollar for any of the hard drugs. Some of the softer ones (IMO) aren't so bad but should really only be indulged in by adults. Alcohol? Blaa. Never cared for it. I don't refrain from drinking it for the sake of any lifestyle. I just don't like it.
