Caring for a spouse with MS

One of the sources of my depression is the fact that I not only have to watch my wife decline as multiple sclerosis does its damage, but also that I had to stop working to take care of her. Home healthcare workers cost so much that were I to keep working, it would only be so that I could pay the workers. Even on Disability, my wife doesn't qualify for that kind of care. But now I have injured my back and my left hip doing all of her medical assists. She's been in bed for nearly three weeks as we wait for the new medical lift to be delivered. That cost us $3,000 by the way. I may be able to recover some of that, but not without jumping through hoops.

Sorry that this is happening.

Would she be eligible to go into a nursing home? Would that even be an acceptable option?

Oh, I could get her in a home if either of us wanted that. But once the lift gets here, we can go back to working on her stability and strength using a walker. Her MS goes into remission. During those periods (last one lasted 4 years) she regains some of what she's lost. She wants to stay home and I want her with me. We're not done living life just yet. Without her, I'd have no reason to wake up in the morning. She is my reason for dealing with life and why I come here, seeking emotional support.

Many blessings to you and your wife. I'm sorry the health care system is so flawed. You are doing a great job looking after your wife and the way you are facing those challenges is inspiring.

Hi, I'm sorry you and your wife are suffering with this. I am going through a neurological condition that is still undiagnosed but is not MS. I am 38 years old. Please look up Dr Terry Wahls. She was able to reverse her MS symptoms and go from being wheel chair bound to biking 18 miles. https://drhyman.com/blog/2021/06/18/podcast-minisode84/

There is also the Swank diet your wife could try. It was one of the largest studies done, showing the longest period of remission for MS. https://nutritionfacts.org/video/treating-multiple-sclerosis-with-the-swank-ms-diet/
