I've suffered from insomnia for just over a year now on and off.
I've been prescribed Zolpidem and Stilnox before but they're useless, well, for me.
Can anyone suggest anything that will help me long term that I could suggest to my general practitioner?
I feel that once I get rid of my insomnia, then my depression will get easier and I'll be on the road to a full recovery.

So any help would be really appreciated.

Have you tried breathing techniques and relaxation techniques?

They work. I've had insomnia for years and I get restbite when I use breathing techniques.

If you like I can PM you a method I use for controlling my breathing. :)
