Covid Emergency Housing in the UK

#1
I have a friend in the UK who is Covid-sheltered because of her health conditions (meaning she's at high risk if she contracts Covid). Her flatmate is a healthcare worker, and there's been an outbreak at her workplace.

In principle she could go to her mum's, but it's not safe for her there (long story). She's tried contacting Shelter before, and she told them that she's Covid sheltered, but apparently when she says she's on a tenancy agreement, they say they can't help her.

She's worried that her flatmate might not let her back in if she leaves (they fight a lot). She has a dog that she doesn't want to leave. Going through a housing change can be stressful, and she has a history of suicide attempts.

Any advice?

I've not heard of any specific provision available for accommodating people at high risk from severe COVID due to existing health conditions, but i 'd suggest your friend contact her local housing authority to find out. Presumably she's in a priority group for the vaccine, and her healthcare worker flatmate should be as well . She could try calling her health authority to find out how long she will have to wait as its possible that living with someone in a high risk job will speed things up.

The government target is to vaccinate everyone in the top four priority groups by February 15th so depending on how clinically vulnerable she is considered to be your friend may get an invitation letter very soon. Priority groups:
  1. residents in a care home for older adults and their carers
  2. all those 80 years of age and over and frontline health and social care workers
  3. all those 75 years of age and over
  4. all those 70 years of age and over and clinically extremely vulnerable individuals. (If she's had letter advising her to shield she will likely fall into this group) For definition of extremely vulnerable groups scroll down here : https://www.gov.uk/government/publi...ng-extremely-vulnerable-persons-from-covid-19
  5. all those 65 years of age and over
  6. all individuals aged 16 years to 64 years with underlying health conditions which put them at higher risk of serious disease and mortality
  7. all those 60 years of age and over
  8. all those 55 years of age and over
  9. all those 50 years of age and over
