I watch reels and the other night came across a person talking about how some people have total silence in their minds.

No constant music, no self recriminations, constant monotone, list of things to do, ideas and inventions its like a racecar track up there, thoughts zooming around.

So I'm curious is that true? Are there people with a neutral state of mind, when there are no thoughts?

Yes it is true. It is something you practice and gradually achieve. I can clear my mind of all thoughts whenever I desire. Meditation usually teaches that skill. It starts with thinking of only one thought. Holding that thought and finally clearing the mind of all thoughts. Takes some time but it is worth it.

The guided meditation in The Mindful Way Through Depression (by J. Mark G. Williams) is one I found much more accessible, & less frustrating. I don't remember where in the audiobook the guide is, sorry, but here's a link to the book's intro. It helps that the speaker's voice is soft & soothing.

Meditation is my nemisis, I just can't focus on one thing and the more I try the harder it seems to get. Its very frustrating.
I would suggest trying to hear it all then - embrace it don't try to push it away ... close your eyes instead of silencing your mind.... just listen. First you hear sounds close to you or in your head ... then expand that hear further out to hear what's in the room - the street - the town and further out and further out... try to hear sounds as far away as possible .... that can lead some to find silence as odd as it may seem.

This is somethiing that can work for me if my mind is stuck in over drive - also nice if you have a singing bowl or chimes and try to listen to how far the sound carries, hear it rippling out as far as you can.

Imho, the biggest mistake that beginning meditators make is thinking that if they have thoughts in their mind, they are not really meditating. However, if you are trying to meditate, you are in fact meditating.

If you wash something with a lot of dirt on it, lot of dirt is going to come off. Likewise, when you begin meditating, you're going to have a lot of thoughts in your mind. So when you have thoughts in your mind when you meditate, rather than saying "I'm doing this wrong!", it's better to say, "Look at all the dirt that's coming out!"

When washing something dirty, you don't expect it to be clean right away. It's actually in the beginning phase of washing a very dirty thing that you're getting rid of the most dirt. So when you are in the early stages of meditation, you're actually making the most progress, even though your mind is still making a lot of noise.

If you can keep your back straight (sitting in a chair to do that is ok if you have to) and not move around that much, watching the dirt of thoughts get washed away is ok, and is real meditation even if your mind is still full of thoughts.

Thats a great analogy!

One thing I found helpful is to float in a swimming pool anchoring my feet to a railing so then just concentrate on breaths in and out because can actually hear them...

Meditation isn't really about focusing on one thing. and there are different ways and styles of meditation. You might be able to find one that you like. I'll share if you want, Let me know..There is one man I enjoy joining in with that does live group meditation on Facebook or you can connect into it on his website, he does this regularly several times a week.......
