I love the internet but at the same time, sometimes I think it's the most diabolical thing ever created.

I've been online for probably around 8 years and it still never ceases to amaze me how vicious people can be. Which, I know, they always were but now, millions of people are constantly exposed to all this rudeness and viciousness. It depresses me even more to see how ugly humanity really is all the time.

Sure, the internet can show you a few rays of hope here and there. You will sometimes see some really amazing and beautiful people online. I guess it depends on where you hang out but I don't like to be ignorant so I try and get an idea of what a large variety of people have to say.

The internet is just the library and town centre blended into one and made easily available.

I have no idea what the town centre is but if there's a RW place where people speak the way some folks do online, it isn't a very pleasant place. Bear in mind that I'm not claiming myself to be innocent of doing exactly the same thing. The format seems to encourage it.

The town centre - a place of gathering and socialization.

Forgive me my platitudes, but people suck.

...especially when identity is blurred. Anonymity gives us wings! (And usually in a less-than-heavenly way.)

This might, yes, make you depressed if it's not what you're used to. Otherwise it'll just keep you depressed.

yes because a lot of times people's true self comes out on the internet. you are what you hide.

Yes it does, usually. Sometimes no. I think you have to consider how one uses the internet before you decide if it is the internet itself that makes a person more depressed or just the person in question using it a certain way.

Good point. You can use a knife to prepare a nice meal or use it to kill the neighbours and get charged for murder. Tools aren't inherently good or bad.

Yes and no. Yes in that when I log onto sites like myspace and facebook and I see people bragging about how they're having a good time and posting drunk photos etc, then that makes me more depressed. Cyber bullying depresses me too, people showing their true colours online.

But at the same time, sites like this are the only thing that really keeps me from harming myself. This may sound sad, but without the people I've met online, I have no one anymore, and I'd rather this than nothing at all.

The Internet saves my life. It's my connection to the outside world. There are nasty people online and in real life, but I'm quite skilled at avoiding them online.

No it doesn't...but there are times when I just can't be doing with it.

Really? I've always found people to be quite pleasant and haven't had any bad experiences. Perhaps the types of sites you choose makes a difference. There are good and bad neighbourhoods on the internet just as there are in real life.

The Internet is an integral part of life. I think that in this case it is entirely subjective and depends on the person. The world is full of narcisists and bullies, they are as much a part of life as breathing. However, unlike breathing, they are optional and can be removed from ones life. If the Internet is depressing you, maybe just stop associating with those sorts of people.

the internet, whilst helping me socialise with friends, also triggers me a hell of a lot. so i guess it probably does more harm than good in my case.

What's most depressing about the Internet is that you don't really know who you're talking to.

The internet doesnt make me depressed, but it has made me much more stupid than I was before.

I blame a website with rotten in the address for that
