British Power protests to this practice, arguing that unpredictable demand (such as a massive drop in consumption for an hour) leads to inefficient production.

If you want to ACTUALLY help the planet, turn off all your lights a few minutes every day, not 60 minutes at the same time every year.

Unless it's worse than nothing as British Power indicates, which I'm inclined to believe despite their conflict of interest. (A reduction in power usage causes an increase in system voltage, so they have to shut generators off, and then there's a spike in power usage as people begin using again and they have to scramble to get everything back online again, which is not efficient at all.)

I'm suggesting that people do do that to cut down on power use.

Most counterproductive idea ever. You know that when things shut down all at the same time, that it actually uses up MORE power to turn them all on afterward? Lol.

Do something that actually helps the environment, like stop littering, and stop reproducing so much.

Power plants cannot accurately predict how many people will turn off the lights for an hour therefore they won't lower production at all or very much therefore all the power is being made but isn't getting used therefore it's sort of like tossing out a perfectly good apple without eating it as a way to decrease the amount of food you consume.

If enough people do it the voltage will spike and they will react to that, the energy can't just disappear.

You can't just turn power plants down or up instantly to exactly match demand; if they get excess current it gets grounded, if the demand exceeds supply you get a brown or blackout.
