You told me not to drink drive mummy
    And so i never drink
You told me to think for myself
And so i sit and think

You told me that i should read
To help me learn new things
You even taught me how to love
    The lord of the rings

You taught me that to be smart
    You had to be kind
And know all sorts of other things
Than the things within your mind

You taught me once that love and time
Can cure things that hurt us most
You tried to teach me guitar even
And how to be the perfect host

You taught me not to cry
When the others put me down
You taught me how to be a good girl
And not the talk of the town

You taught me how to tell the time
    When I was years late
You taught me how to want for things
And not leave things for fate

You taught me how to be
The best that I can be
And that even when things are bad
Where to find some faith in me

You told me not to bite my nails
And not be phased by tests
You taught me poems do not rhyme
    So I know your unimpressed

You taught me that its alright to be afraid
    Even when others are not
You taught me how to check for oil
And then how to drive.. or not

But the one thing that I learnt most
    I have learnt this year
The thing that means the most to me
    Is that your always here

A year of tears and suffering
    And a casualty or two
The things I learnt this year
    Were all about you.

  8. Inspite of the last 'additional comments', I (agree with the rest of the folks) think it's an awesome and beautiful gift to give to your mum, in recognition of the gifts she gave you. Few get around to doing that, till it's too late. And I *do* know (all too well) what it's like to be visited by repeated crises - I feel it in others too. It's hell (but not as much fun). Remember to take care of yourself...

Thought I'd add this quote (made *me* cry many times, being in my own "Ephel Dúath" ) from LOTR. That, and, "Not all who wander are lost"
    (spoken by Gandalf)

    FoundAndLost1

~ Far above the Ephel Dúath in the West the night-sky was still dim and pale. There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.

    - The Return of The King (J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of The Rings” – George Allen and Unwin Ltd. 1974)

I signed up here after reading your poem. I have never cried so hard in my life. You have a great talent and your honesty is so powerful. I thought I had better ask, as I am rubbish with writing anything even remotely meaningful, if I could possibly print off your poem to put by my mothers grave. She died really recently in a brutal murder which unfortunately I witnessed. Your poem seems to say all the things I have regretted not saying before her death. I thank you so much for your beautiful words and will check back to see your responce to this. x Jen
