@Astrid78 Yeah I am glad that sespite the house being so old, the drain down at the bottom of the basrment works. It probably just goes into the dirt somewhere - but it works.

I couldn't help thinking anout this thread this morning when taking a shower. What about switching to those on-demand rankless hot water units?
I was thinking about getting one but there's a lot of silica in this water, so I was concerned about that requiring too much maintenance.
Hope you come across someone who has a solution for yout dilemma.

I hope you get some kind of Christmas miracle Astrid.
no dont say that! if something else bad happens I am blaming you :D
the miralce would be my dick husband actually installing it.....I have a flyer for lawncare/handyman someone put in my mailbox (illegal in the states btw) but it mentions a willingness for trade, as I am a cleaning lady I'll be calling after the holidays if dick husband doesn't get it first. Someone put a flyer in my mailbox advertising lawncare and are willing to trade services in lieu of cash payment. I plan on calling after the holidays to set up lawn care, I am going to ask if they know someone who can install this heater.

A licensed contractor is more than some random handyman, but it's likely worth it. If something goes wrong they're more likely to fix it, & when you sell the place, the buyer's agent will make a fuss so there's that too.

I ended up paying cash and that brought the bill down to 3400 usd. Ouch. (70 gal. + install, new connections & take away the old tank)

Ouch. Yeah, that's a lot. I hope you get a big tax return and it comes soon. There's also crowdfunding (it wouldn't let me put in the name). I have set up numerous fundraisers for online friends for vet bills, medical expenses and other costs. Let me know if you want me to set one up for you and you can give the link to anyone who would be willing to contribute. I think it's against the TOS to post it here, but I did set up one for a member here and she just gave the link to people she knows. It can be anonymous so there's no pressure to anyone.

Thanks @Lady Wolfshead what a wonderful thing! Unfortunatly I don't have anyone to give such a link too.

I'm trying hard not to let this get to me, to remain positive about boiling water for bathing, which was kind of quaint at first but has now become another chore in which I must decide if its worth the effort or not. Usually its not as it takes about an hour to get enough water, which isn't really a lot either so its also cold. Oh well at least its better then a bird bath. Thanks for listening to me whine.
