    Why the pain and hurt
    For millions on earth?
    Why is it allowed
    When higher powers are merciful?

Why are so many children hurt
    Intentionally and unintentionally?
    Doesn't a higher being understand
The lifetime of suffering that follows?

    Why do crops fail
With so many mouths to feed?
    Why are animals tortured
When all they do is love?

    Why do people
    Not help each other?
A smile can go so far
    To lighten a stranger's soul.

    Why do diseases exist,
Are there lessons to be learned?
    Or are those afflictions
    A vicious joke on humanity?

I wish I could just accept
    Ach, ní thuigim.

A thoughtful poem...I've never found a rational explanation for "why" there is suffering - whether it is human, animal, or geological in nature. I like your point in the lines "A smile can go so far / To lighten a stranger's soul." So true. :)
