    “In the Jaws”

Awakening in the Jaws of a sleeping beast
Memories of terrible dreams haunt me
    Dreams that tear myself down
Dreams that break away the light

Then I realize this sleeping beast
is my dormant demons taking an uneasy slumber
That mouth, a cavernous domain in which I seem trapped
    Is hot and stifling

A gaze out through the slightly parted teeth
I see a world of joy, hope, ambition
    A world of humanity
And it comes to me--I am a prisoner
Forever trapped in memories stronger than me
