Is there such a thing as FREE therapy??

Probably a crazy question, but I don't know what to do. I am on Medicare due to a physical disability, with Humana as my Advantage plan... they offer ONE provider for 'Mental Health'... not only is it CLEAR across town, meaning I would need to take 3-4 busses EACH way, and it would probably take me 2-3 hours each way depending on the time of day... but also they 'require' a not-so-cheap co-pay for every visit that I just cannot afford! I am VERY lucky that with this plan every visit to my Primary care doctor has $0 co-pay so I can see him as much as I want, but not only can I not talk to him, I don't think he has a clue as to anti-depressants... I don't even think he believes HOW depressed I AM... I saw him today, and first I saw his medical student, and he asked me if I have had any suicidal thoughts recently, and I answered honestly YES... and told him my anti-dep med is NOT helping (Welbutrin XL300)... so he goes out and talks to doc, then they both come in and doc gives me Effexor... that's it... wouldn't talk about anything... oh, and I have now been reading about all these people who have taken BOTH Welbutrin & Effexor at the SAME time... so now I am wondering, did he mean for me to stop the Welbutirin or take both? Plus I recently started smoking again due to stress and depression but really want to quit again, so I asked him about Chantix... he laughed at me, said 'You don't really need that, just quit... but whatever, I'll give it to you I guess'!! Great, that makes me feel SO much better! He is NOT therapy... in fact I think I need therapy MORE because of him!!
So my specialists (Neuro, etc) cost me hefty co-pays... plus all my meds... so I just don't have the money to pay the mental health place a co-pay! Especially because at the moment, the way I feel, I would probably need at least 2 visits per week or more to start... because I am seriously messed up at the moment. But they do NOT offer any financial assistance or sliding scale or anything...

So... while I think I desperately need professional help, I don't think I can get it... not unless their is some good samaritan doctor out there who sees patients for free... or like $5 a visit... and even that would be pushing it right now. So I thought, what the heck, I'd ask the silly question... can't hurt. Hope not anyway, I am already hurting enough...

PLUS now I am reading all these horrible things about Effexor (some of the things I have read that people experienced, I sometimes experience already without ANY med... so it might DOUBLE for me!!), and of course I have already heard bad things about Chantix, so I am afraid to take either one... that is why I WISH I had a therapist of some kind to talk to! Of course, lately most days I wonder 'why bother... just do it and you won't have to worry about money ever again... or docs or meds or pain... etc...'!! All the problems just go away!

Anyway, just thought I would throw this out there... just in case someone has some secret knowledge they would be willing to share! I live in Las Vegas, NV by the way, so please don't give me a doctor in the UK, or even Florida!

WOW... you're fast... I just posted this minutes ago! lol

Thank you so much... I will check these out, especially the UNLV one, that is very close to me!! I will see what they say about 'not turning anyone away'... and I will check a few others out as well! The Christian one probably wouldn't be too great... first, I am NOT religious at ALL... plus they would probably try to 'fix me'... being gay and all! That is NOT the kind of fixing I need! lol

Thanks for the help!! I really appreciate it!!

oh god yea christian and gay not a good mix.. you don't need that shit. i hope it helps. if UNLV isn't right for you call them all up and ask if they have any other places they can recommend... or try trainee psychologists or therapists.. they often charge v little and have to be well supervised.

not sure what to suggest for you regarding the meds.. the system there is so fucked up unless you have insurance.. good luck tho eh?? tc
