My first album given to me was a set of Disney soundtracks on vinyl. It was a big, big Christmas present.

The first album I can recall buying myself was Elton John's Captain Fantastick on vinyl (sorry if I am not remembering the title correctly).

Ty for opening this fun Cafe today.

my first albums were on vinal when i was given a portable player close to 8 yrs old. It was a bunch of songs by the Muppets. i had a couple others, but don't recall much about them other than i listened to them constantly.

All my cassette tapes i made myself as a teen from recording what was on the radio or recordings of me. (back when i didn't care who heard me sing)

However, when i was 16, i began purchasing some cassettes, my first one was by The Cure. i find it funny how young teens today don't realize how popular they have been since the 70s.

The first album I ever bought with my own money was Dookie by Green Day (on CD), though it was a little over a decade after it came out. I wanted to buy American Idiot, which was the most recent Green Day CD then, but my mom wouldn't let me get it because it had the parental advisory sticker for explicit lyrics. Honestly, Dookie is probably about as explicit as American Idiot, but it didn't have the sticker, so my mom let me buy it.

Oh dear, that will be a good laugh. The first album I ever got was a birthday present from my dad, and it was... brace yourselves... Tatu's 200 km/h album, on CD. :D I was 9 and a big fan. ^^ I could sing all the lyrics in Russian without knowing what they mean. It's probably the only time I jumped at my dad from joy and hugged him.

I know the second one was the Pussycat Dolls CD, purchased by my mom. I couldn't speak good English yet, but same again, I kept singing all the songs and didn't care about the meaning.

The first one I bought myself must have been Evanescence "Fallen", during my "dark" phase. :D I learned the songs as well, but after a short time, I went to my first metal concert and never listened to any of these again.

I don’t remember the first one I ever got, but the first I ever bought with my own money was Soundgarden’s “Superunknown” on cassette. Young me had good taste, as it turns out.

My sister’s bf was into a lot of the same music I was, hard rock and grunge, so I recorded a lot of his CDs onto cassette and put together a pretty good music collection. I only ever had to buy the stuff he didn’t have.

I begged my sister not to break up with him.

Hello SF family! I hope this finds you well as can be.

What was the first album you purchased?
What format was it (vinyl, cassette, CD, digital)?
Thanks for posting a cafe for today Angie, cool theme. I’m a bit tired lately, but otherwise pretty good. Hope you’re well too.

First album I bought was on a cassette tape format (there were only tapes and CD’s when I was a kid lol, was past the vinyl time which I think was mostly 60’s and 70’s) and it was the Dance Mix ‘94 tape. I had a walkman so I would always be listening to it in my room, I loved all the songs on it so much, it had some great dance songs on it :) Can’t remember if “I” actually bought it or if it was a gift, but it’s the first tape I remember owning anyway :p

Hmm, i think the first album i was ever given was a cassette tape for my new walkman, and i believe it was the Phil Collins Hits album. My parents adored him, and i ended up developing a taste for their musical interests that remains to this day. (Big ups to the people who even know who Level 42 are, let alone enjoy their music. ;))

As for the first one i ever bought, i'm pretty sure it was a CD of Disturbed's Ten Thousands Fists album. This was my edgy teen years when i started to mix in a lot of metal, most of which i grew past. :D

The earliest albums I remember buying myself with either birthday or Christmas money were Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player by Elton John, Band On The Run by Paul McCartney and Wings and Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd. All were vinyl we still had the turntable and a huge collection of albums that my dad had. He is where I likely picked up my love of a mix of: rock, country, gospel, classical, jazz and blues.

You’re welcome for the tag ^, Witty and Lisa ;)
Loved Good Charlotte, can’t remember if I had that specific CD of theirs or not, pretty sure I had at least one though, they had some great songs :)

i was obsessed with them. Played their music every night to fall asleep. i actually got a spiderweb tattoo on my elbow like Benji's except i did my friends color, so it is black and purple. i wanted to do my favorite color on my other elbow but never have gotten to it. They do have some great songs. "Hold On" is probably my favorite and has gotten me through so much.

My first musical purchase was also my first financial decision that didn’t involve candy. I think it was 4th grade so 9-10 years old, and I got Pink Floyd’s album, The Wall, on cassette. It was two cassettes! In hindsight, it was a genius move despite my being too young to recognize it at the time. I had stumbled upon one of the best recordings of all time, just because I liked the cover art. I would go on to get Kind of Blue by the Miles Davis jazz combo (Bill Evans, who played piano, is still my favorite keyboardist of all time), which is almost always in the top 5 of any list of best albums over all genres. So it’s kind of like I just lucked in to all this great music, and it makes sense that I would become a musician. Good thing I didn’t start off with some kind of awful bubblegum pop.

That’s awesome! Ya I liked them a lot too and had a crush on a couple of them too (forget their names now, Benji might’ve been one of them though, lol). I liked “Hold On” too, it gave me a lot of comfort when it was sometimes hard for me to do that. I’m glad it’s gotten you through a lot too :)
