O.K., I do NOT work for this company, I just bought the product and it is amazing! So far, it's only applicable and worth it if you live in the U.S., but they will probably make it available around the world pretty soon.

So it's called "Magic Jack" (www.magicjack.com) and it costs 40 USD. You plug it into a USB port in your computer and plug a phone into it. If you have cordless phones, any extra bases you have will work on the same line, so you can have unlimited phones hooked up to it. It uses your high-speed internet connection as a phone line (cable or DSL) and you can call from the U.S. to anywhere else in the U.S. for free. You can also use it to call from anywhere in the world to anywhere in the U.S. for free, so if you have relatives or friends in the U.S., it makes sense to buy it. Also, and very importantly, anyone, anywhere in the world who owns one of these can call anyone else with a Magic Jack anywhere in the world for free. You can also take it with you (it's about the size of a pack of gum) with your laptop when you travel and just plug the hotel phone into it or whatever and make free calls using the same phone number.

The 40 USD includes the purchase of the device and your first YEAR of phone service! Every year thereafter is 20 USD per YEAR for unlimited free calling to anywhere in the US.

I just bought this thing and it's freaking amazing! The clarity is better than my land line.

Now if your internet goes out, you will have to use your cell phone, but that's a pretty small price to pay IMO.

I'm cancelling my phone service and sticking it to the phone company, yay!

Also, if you have more than 1 computer, you can get 1 for each and have multiple lines in your home for 20 USD per year for each.

I know this sounds like an advertisement  but I just feel like telling everyone I know about this thing :)
