Ok, some random selections given that you don't have a genre preference... (oh I could go on for hours....)

    Godfather I and II
    Citizen Kane (absolute classic)
A Clockwork Orange (warning for surreal vilolence, so beware)
Once Upon a Time in America
Superman I and II (stupidly clichéd but so fitting for the time, also a product of the Godfather author)
    Alien & Aliens
LoTR (the extended editions of al three movies, so get some popcorn and coffee)
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    The Matrix (forget the sequels)

    If you feel more adventurous...

    (The) Audition
Lady Vengeance (or the whole vengeance troliolgy)
Anything by the Master of animation, H. Miyazaki -- Howl's Moving Castle, for instance.

    Oh I could go on...

    *cowers in geekiness*

[EDIT: I second Cabin in the Woods but add the Scream trilogy (forget Scream 4)]
