She came away from a dark, steep, cold place.
She came to this open land
    peopled with desperate fantasies
    colored with vague promises.

    She came with three others,
    but she came alone.
    Four shoulders hunched,
    four necks bowed and strained.
    One apart from the others.

    Lurching off the gangplank,
    she stepped into someplace else.

The wide wide sky drowned her.
    The wide land lost her.
    She was swallowed whole.

    She wandered
    and we never found her.
