So, I was on the gametrailers forums, and this character calling himself Dragon Rebel complains about liking young girls. He has been doing this since last year I think, so I don't think it is trolling. I decided to look up rehabilitation centers to give him information, but I couldn't find anything on them. Only thing I could find was a hospital where they imprison sexual predators in California, but you have to first serve time, and then be forced by the law to be imprisoned there after serving the prison sentence. Anyone have any information? I would like this person to seek help immediately.

Pedophilia is not a mental illness, it's a sexual deviancy. I once saw a special on BBC about treatment centers like the one you mention, where you spend time in prison first and then spend time in the treatment center.

But the treatment centers have been described as worse than prison by the inmates that are in them.

I think treating a pedophile is like treating someone with antisocial personality disorder. That is, it's not treatable, but you can teach the person to control their urges. I think that's as far as it goes. There is no medication that helps with pedophilia, and therapy is only of limited use. It's like trying to treat homosexuality. You really can't do it.

Now, you can use it as a topic in traditional therapy. That's as good as he can do, I think.

According to what I read it counts as a mental disorder. I guess I could put this somewhere else though since it is not a "general disorder."

Alright, I'm gonna check this shit out. *whips out DSM-IV*

    ...

Hey, yeah, it is! So is exhibitionism, fetishism, frotteurism, sexual masochism, sexual sadism, transvestic fetishism, voyeurism, and paraphilia NOS. I had never looked at that section before.

Still, ah...I really don't think there's an effective treatment for it. You can't make someone give up their sexual preference. It's sort of an innate thing, you know?

Whoa, wait! But remember what I said before. So long as he can control his urges, he's alright. If he's having trouble doing that, clinical therapy could help. He does not want to end up in prison or a treatment center.

a good therapist will help him deal with this, before he actually abuses anyone. i've read there is mixed success with treatment, but he absolutely should follow up with a professional and make his best effort. he may not have acted on his fantasies, but for all you know he could be dabbling in online child pornography, which is an activity that will sooner or later land him in jail. so, try and send him to a mental health professional.
