I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section, I wasn't sure where to post it..

I was talking to someone earlier and they said that they find pornography 'sickening'. I was quite shocked at this response because I thought that watching pornography (providing it's with consenting adults) was acceptable.

Is it really that bad?

Please discuss.

I think it's inherently sexist, for obvious reasons. However, I think it's this sexism that men so enjoy, even people like myself who wouldn't usually regard myself as sexist.
However, the women involved are doing so at their own choice, so, to quote a song...
"You think I sell my body, I merely sell my time"

I like it. The women that do it (in the mainstream) get good money and are comfortable with it.
I guess it is very male orientated but then again maybe that is because a survey says women like literature more to "get them going".
I must admit, I don't like to see two people just going at it willy nilly but that's just me. I like sensuality mainly because i'm sad and lonely and dream of one day having something like it myself.
Till then i'm going to carry on looking at porn with a proud smile on my face :)

Some people find it "degrading" to women. The thing is it's not like the women that are making porn are against it. They are objectifying their body at their own free will. To those that find it sickening to each their own, but it's not against the law and they obviously don't mind making it.

It can degrade women, but a lot of women are turned on by being degraded, in the bedroom only of course. I think that's where anti-porn campaigners are forming misguided opinions on it, they are failing to differentiate the degradation from the bedroom to outside it.

Everybody in porn is consenting, so sexism groups and campaigners should chill out a little. Personally, I could take it or leave it, I'm more turned on by my imagination to be honest. But there are enough people that are into porn, so I think the people that are branding it "unacceptable" are a little too stuffy and uptight, in my opinion of course, and they're certainly in the minority.

It's important to be who you are and never let anybodies extreme opinion on something influence your own opinion on it.

recordings of people doing it. Nothing wrong with it. Does it do more harm or good for society overall? thats what I'd like to know. It probably does have a negative influence.

I dislike a lot of porno, cause its vulgar and sexist and uh yeah degrading to relationships. Lot of those porn stars seem like cretins. Don't care if they treat people poorly.

So much Porn is.........boring ...I am sure I could do better

IMO as long as it is legal to do "it" then nothing should prevent folk recording the pictures and sharing with others for fun or for money.

I would personally not have sex and share the video - but that is more out of shyness rather than any moral problems. But for a million pounds I'd be happy to post a video on Youtube of me having sex...........with a goat  Both for the money and because it would be funny :biggrin:

There will always be two sides to the coin and two different arguments to every subject.

If you like porn then that's fine, don't let anyone's opinion make you feel horrible or dirty.
Don't let people peer pressure you into being like them.

I think it depends on the porn producers. Most of it is fine, but some of it I find pretty gross, I just don't get the whole peeing or vomitting on people thing. . . I know that the people involved are doing it of their own free will and I just don't want watch it, but sometimes the internet violates you and forces you to see things you don't want to see.

Good point. It's not nice happily scanning the net and something you don't want to see pop up. I mean ok, there's certain boundaries where you can say for example, "coronation street came on television and I hate it". You just turn it over. But some things shouldn't be there in the first place unless you're explicitly looking for them.
As Fishman said, people need to have a good look at the industry and the internet especially and write a few good rules up.

Has anyone seen Sex: The Annabel Chong Story?

Also 'Trauma and Recovery' is a good book too in addition to watching that film, not because the film is traumatic, it is, but because of things like sexual abuse, physical abuse and renactment- which I don't understand why nobody has mentioned yet.

I think it's sad and says a lot about the culture we live in. I wrote an essay about this a few years ago about a performance artist I love hitting the nail on the head so to speak, he dealt with food, sex, porn, war, mythology, supply, demand, body, money, culture etc......I hadn't seen one porn clip at the time but I completely understood what he was getting at. The things I've come across-only clips- they disturb me and frighten me to be honest.

Pornography can be a really personal thing that people just need... i guess... there are aspects of the industry that could be criticised though...

Pornography is a personal choice.

That said, after years and years of watching I believe it is damaging. Feel free to watch it, but don't assume it will not warp your physical/sexual expectations, desires and standards. As a man it has done to me what magazines and TV does to women. Put unrealistic expectations on myself. And forget what sex is really about. I still can't enjoy sex. Because to be honest I might as well be having sex with myself, all I care about is the girls reaction, how good I look, how hard I can pound etc etc. It is sickening and such a flagrant display of vanity that sex for me might as well be masturbation.

Try and learn to equate sex with something more than just self love people...

Personally, I wish I had so few problems in my life that I had nothing better to do than try and come up with petty arguments against porn or people who enjoy it.

I used to like porn more than I do now. But I still watch it and I don't care what people think.

i think its a case of focusing the mind, rather than having problems or not.

Personally, i dont like porn. Essentially for the reasons which have already been said. Thats my own personal though and i dont think there is anything deeply wrong with people watching two consenting adults. I think there can be a lot of fuel in the argument that its not the women being exploited, but rather the women exploiting men.

However, i think the line really need to be drawn somewhere. Rape porn has close corrilations with offending, and snuff, child abuse imagry ect.. is all sick. If its a nice normal fuck then go for it, just dont show me :)
