"I am but a little boy,
    Waiting to grow old.
I want to see the land,
I want to know the sky.

I am but a little boy,
Dressed in a grown man's suit.
His life was given to me,
    A burden for my shoulders.

I am but a little boy,
    Dressed in full war regalia.
    These medals slow my step,
    This rifle makes me stumble.

I am but a little boy,
But I've walked these men's steps.
Their lives lead to roads mine does not,
For I am but a little boy."

    Near-Life Experiences

    "Windows down, volume up.
The radio dial searches for coherency,
    The car searches for chaos.
I have a split second warning.
I don't even remember what the sign said.

    The world bends round.
The car tumbles and for a moment
Gravity decides I'm not even worth it.
I'm falling in every direction at once.
Everywhere I look is sky, ground, death.

Death is overpowered by the open road.
I crawl out of the flaming scrap heap
Everything important was in that car.
    Important papers, expensive suits.
I suppose that's why it burned so well.
    Windows Down, Volume Up.
    I love you, Kansas."

I don't know who coined the term "Near-Life Experiences" but I love it.
