Rant on US Medicare

Although I am past 65 and eligible for (US) Medicare - I lost my coverage. I was unemployed for two months in Dec 2022 and Jan 2023 and paid my premium late. I just assumed everything was ok. I was going through a medical workup and I just kept going for tests and appointments until one day in April I found out my claims were not being paid.

Every time I call this agency I am put on hold anywhere between a half hour and ninety minutes. When I finally get through to someone I have to start at the beginning and tell them everything. I've been told to upload two different forms, by two different people. I finally got a verification of which was the correct form, filled it out and uploaded it on April 17. I also sent them $1000 in addition to the money I've already sent in this year. They processed my check and never sent an acknowledgment. The form is a petition for the insurance coverage to be re-instated and includes space for an explanation of why your payment is late. There is space on the form for two sentences. I said I was laid off from my job and couldn't make my payment on time. I seems like that should be clear enough.,

Its been nearly 4 months. Nobody from Medicare has ever called or emailed me. There are no messages for me on the website. Today I called and had to go through it all again. The guy said well you're going to have to fill out documentation for a "case worker". A CASE WORKER? My payment was late ONCE so you cancel my insurance. You treat me like I'm a "case"? This isn't complicated, but they are making a federal case out of it.

I burst into tears on the phone and told him about all the doctors appointments and tests I've had to cancel in the last 5 months. My pharmacy insurance was also cancelled, so now I have to pay out of pocket at the pharmacy and I'm spending 3 times as much. I'm depressed, I have headaches, I have breathing problems, and my rotator cuff in my right shoulder is torn- which gives me pain every single day.

This afternoon I went to the pharmacy and burst into tears at the counter. I feel like I am being brutally punished for a late payment. Its costing me my mental and physical health. There's not a damn thing I can do about it - I keep calling, and I keep running into walls.

People over 65 are entitled to Medicare insurance, but if you have a late payment they will keep you from getting the care you need. They don't care if you get sicker or more depressed.

I just want to cry and cry and cry. This is so unfair.

This is horrible and I am sending you strength and hoping you can get it resolved soon. Bureaucracies are hideous to deal with and when it involves something vital and time-sensitive it's worse. All that can be done is to just keep persisting with them until you get through to someone who can help. I'm so sorry you've gone through this and it does sound ridiculous.

So very sorry that you are going through this @alice202
I left the US many, many years ago…
Here in Europe there are tons of hoops to jump through and paperwork to complete, just like there is in the USA…
However, in the countries that I have been in there is Socialised Medicine - which is reasonably priced with Excellent care…
It saddens me deeply that someone like yourself has been treated this badly…
Getting older is hard enough as it is, those who are *caring* for us shouldn’t make it any worse…
Really hoping that this is resolved quickly for you…

Thank you @SillyOldBear, @Lady Wolfshead, and @Widowedvegan for your support. This morning I wrote to two of my representatives - my US Senator and my Congressman. They are supposed to be able to help when you are dealing with a Federal agency. I figure its time to ask for some help. If a person at one of these agencies gets a call from a government official maybe they'll move a little faster. I am just at wit's end with this.

Alice it is unbelievable that they have put you through this
I didn't know something like this could even happen, particularly since you can work and get SSA after 65 or 66. What is really outrageous is the lack if help with this. It's good that you are contacting people to advocate for you. I hope they help and maybe direct you to legal support to get back payments. This is so unfair

I'm in complete disbelief and fear reading this. I'm so sorry you are having this experience that should not even be happening. You posted this near the beginning of the month, has anything moved positively with it yet?
This Medicare red tape is complete and utter garbage and I hope you get a fast decent response from the senator and congressman. Please let us know. I wish you the best with complete reinstatement without any penalties so you can have the medical care you we have the right to have. I also am curious to know what happened to the money you have sent them this year.......

So sorry to hear about your lack of help with Medicare. The people they hire. . . I wonder if they do not want to do their job. I went to mail a letter. It cost over $2. I have some forever stamps so I asked for some one cent stamps to make up the difference. The woman sitting on her stool said they don’t have any!!!! So I go 2 miles down the road and the woman standing at the window gladly gives me one cent stamps. Her post office is smaller but yet she had the stamps. By the way, I have gone to the former post office and gotten one cent stamps there from a different worker. So I know they have them. Just some workers do not want to get up and go to the back counter drawer to get them. Sad world.

So at last I have my Medicare part B back. Once my US Senator got involved I felt like they were more responsive. Well, it wasn't her exactly - it was a guy from her office. At first social security sent another form out for me to sign. I filled it out and dropped it in the post office mailbox two days later. (They told me there was a drop box, but there was not.) A week later another lady called and asked me to return the form. I called her and said you must have lost it, send it again. I had also gotten a voice mail from somebody that I couldn't understand. I heard the words "courtesy call" but I could not decipher it and there was no phone number given. Courtesy call to say screw you, you have to re-enroll next year or to say you are reinstated.

Then I got an email from the Senator's office saying that they were told I hadn't returned the form, and they made false statements about my payments. They only acknowledged 1/3 of what I sent in. I called the Senator's office up and cried, and he told me to write something saying I had missed a payment due to unemployment. He said he would make sure they got it and worked on it.

I looked on the website and it seemed like the coverage was back. There was an accurate record of my payments. I called the local office and the guy said if its back up on the website its back. One incoherent phone call, no letter, no email, no indication that there was ever a gap. No bill, no nothing. And there won't be. You just have to wait and if you call back in you will wait forever again.

So I called my medical provider and told them they could submit the bills again. I started making dr appts.

I've heard that when people apply for disability they have to apply 3 times. They reject you the first two times. Whether its a physical or mental illness, this just seems brutal. I know the effect that waiting 4 months for my coverage has had on my mental health. It was stressful and made me depressed. It should not be this way.

I don't know if the workers just don't care or if they are just worn down from talking to angry unhappy people all day. I'll bet there is a huge amount of turnover.

When I was complaining to my Senator's office I reminded them that I have been paying into Social Security/Medicare for over fifty years to collect this benefit! And they act like they are doing you a big favor. Poor customer service, huge bureaucracy. I guess they are underfunded. And one of our political parties always wants to cut funding. Let the elderly die.

Thanks people, for your support. If you are in the US and have good representatives, they can help with something like this. I know my other US Senator wouldn't have helped, but this one got on it right away. It is her job, of course but it still feels good to have someone powerful go to bat for you.
