Right-wingers are less intelligent than left-wingers: Study

    by Sympatico.ca News

Controversial Brock University study looks at political views and intelligence
Do you tend to vote for right-wing parties in elections? If the answer is yes, you should probably look away now.

A Canadian study out of Brock University, Ontario, is receiving a lot of international attention for saying that right-wingers tend to be less intelligent than left-wingers, and that people with low childhood intelligence grow up to be racist and hold anti-gay views.

The authors of the study published in Psychological Science claim that people with low intelligence tend to gravitate towards ring-wing views because they make them feel safe. In fact the academics also suggest that conservative politics serve as a ‘gateway’ into prejudice against others.

The research analyzed more than 15,000 people from two studies conducted in 1958 and 1970. Children were assessed for intelligence at the age of 10 and 11, and then the same group was asked political questions when they turned 33 to form a correlation between smartness and political views. In adulthood these people were asked whether they agreed with statements such as “I wouldn’t mind working with people from other races,” or “I wouldn’t mind if a family of different race moved next door.”

Apparently social status plays no part in this study and neither does education. The findings say that only innate intelligence is a factor into conservatism.

As expected, this study is causing quite a stir both at home and internationally.

How do you feel about this study and its findings?

Doesn't surprise me, although it's certainly overly simplistic. People who are less intelligent are often less open to new ideas, tend to be more closed-minded, and more likely to resist change. This mindset often aligns more closely with right-wing parties. But a lot of right-wingers have a really strong sense of community, culture, and morality that contrasts with left-wing ideas of individual liberty.

I often feel like right-wing politicians are speaking in a different language, because really, they are. At first, so much of what they say sounds idiotic, but then I realize that they're actually just addressing a totally different set of concerns that I just don't have, or that I just don't care about. Like people having to change their way of life, for instance. I don't mind change at all, since that makes the world more interesting and exciting, but for someone who is running a family business that just can't keep up with the changing times, well, I could see how right-wing rhetoric would appeal to someone like that.

Of course, the notion that any politician can bring back the good old days is preposterous, but sometimes false hope is better than no hope at all.

There's also evidence that left wingers are not only smarter but also more educated. If you take a map indicating all the ridings in Ontario that went left wing (NDP) and place it over a map of the ridings with the highest average education, they are an exact match.

Different concerns doesn't really change the fact that they are still, on average, less intelligent and educated.

Also, I don't really believe the old days were better. The world is improving all the time or at least not getting any worse. People who don't see that are just afraid of change. But then perhaps the less intelligent and educated are the ones who are most afraid of change because they will have more difficulty learning new skills and adapting to it, hence they become Conservatives.

Were the more moderate people more intelligent than those that were mostly either conservative or liberal?

I suppose it would depend on how one defines right-wing and left-wing. Some people might be greedy, selfish, and amoral - yet still intelligent. One doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the other.

This study seems to imply that the left-wing view coincides with the politically correct view, but I don't think that's correct either.

I'd be interested in looking at the raw data, if they published it.

I think that the right is made stupider by the religious nuts and rednecks who recite ridiculous cliches as if they're profound insights or 'gotcha' moments, while the left is made stupider by overeager young people who really don't have a clue what it is that they're supporting. Also, I don't think intelligence/IQ necessarily means that you're always right... you need experience to temper your idealism in order to lead effectively... you can't run a country only on ideas and principles.

Also, there are some extremely conservative East Asian countries that have the highest IQs in the world (or claim to)... though I'm not sure it's because of their incredible critical thinking skills and is probably more due to memory skills.

So yeah, this doesn't really change my opinion that the moderates are the most sensible-- though it doesn't really seem to factor that into the study.

On the other forum i use they had a vote and opinion was split exactly and people made arguments for and against both.Anybody who sits in either camp is clearly dumb and somewhere in the middle is just right:)

As far as I'm concerned its a pointless study because neither the left nor right has a monopoly on both stupidity and ignorance.

'somewhere' but not in the middle necessarily, thats just being an 'empty independent' really. or being 'too openminded'/politically correct

the reality of whats 'correct' is much further left than right but that doesnt mean the average democrat isnt an idiot

since 'right' includes limiting social freedom, cruel and unusual punishment, in the past supporting slavery etc

true leftism is pro-social freedom entirely, if leftism means 'fake communism thats really a dictatorship' then maybe but it actually doesnt

socialism is the highest form of social justice, but it doesnt work in the real world very well in its purest form

I think the extreme right wingers who completely buy into the paranoid media such as The Sun / Daily Mail (or FOX News in the USA) tend to be kind of stupid and unable to think for themselves, same with the Bible bashers and those who automatically think anything the government does is EV1L!!!1 or nanny state/PC gone mad or something. But there are intelligent and merely sensible people who are 'right-wing'. So it depends on how you define 'right-wing' or how extreme at least.

I suppose I could be described as being a bit left-wing with some of my viewpoints, but I find many aspects of the left as kind of cringeworthy and not all 'lefties' are exactly smart either (psuedo-intellectual, if anything), which is why I can't stand the Guardian newspaper either.

On the poll on that other forum which was split on this topic there's been an update.A left winger has claimed a split poll as a victory for lefties and said that we can clearly disregard all the votes that didn't go our way. Not exactly an endearing attitude from the left now is it?

When they say "on average" they mean the bell curves for intelligence and education are further to the right for left-wiingers as a whole than for right wingers. That doesn't mean there are not stupid left wingers or even right-wingers who are smarter than some left-wingers. It's important to understand statistical analysis and the concept of an average for a population to understand this study that is, you need to be intelligent and educated, lol.

Hey hey loud voices of the moment! Way to promote bullshit that's connected to so many "important" and precious things. I love it! Excuse me whilst I go fuck about with my time and get lured into all this lovely rational understandable justifiable crap. Course then.. me being like this im probably the asshole who doesn't contribute so I shouldn't say anything about it. Meh.. Ill get some popcorn and waste time watching other people waste time as they struggle to work together and work on a chaotic disjointed common understanding for some blurry unspoken future which is riddled with "important" issues of the moment and potential future. Tick... Tock..... tick.. tock. Course I can say that because I don't give a shit. But articles like these? Wasting your time imo.. you're in for a helluva manipulating lying, selfish, stupid moment. But guess what? Breaking news! We're gonna give you life and freedom! and in return make you care about the bullshit that helps sustain that. Oh... meh you're still a waste of time society, but so am I :) ... :( More scary than anything this shit is tbh. You define people so easily when people try to help in society. I dont really give a fuck about society, but there are loads of people that do, and to be pro-active join groups which are labled and defined and mis represented ect. Articles like this.. Narh.. Serously? It's bad news. im sure it's been loaded into someones head and heart who cares about this shit, ready to be thrown at "lefties and Righties" when an argument doesnt go your way. Or perhaps it's in the back of your mind whn you talk to one, playing or sourcing from this "information" to "understand" them. Garbage. Everyones can be a fucking idiot regardless of what "group or side" you choose. Guess this is one pockets "generalized" way of explaining these two. Could waste your time on the questionable methods they used to come to these conclusions.. Feel free to waste your time.. eh hem, use youre time as you see fit :) My side says we're all idiots in one regard. Just depends from whose perspective.. and this seems like mental poison and an insult to people who are in both of these groups. Who knows though..
