For a site that is supposed to be dedicated to suicide prevention I find it odd that it took me 10 minutes to register because it was asking me questions like "Who is the lead singer of Evanescence?" and "What is the national bird of Austria?" Seriously? Then I see it can take 2 hours to approve membership? Not to be crass but I could be dead by the time I even get to post on this forum. More frustration to an already very frustrating day.

Yeah, I had a tough time signing in because of the stupid questions. Had to try and try again until one came up that I knew the answer to.

I think they ask questions like that to make sure there's not bots or scammers trying to get on the site. I know it can be a bit frustrating when you are looking for help right away. But I hope that you do keep posting and talk about what's on your mind.

Witty_Sarcasm is right; as frustrating as the sign-up process is, it's necessary in order to try and protect the site from spammers. I'm sorry you found it so difficult though; I activated your account a few hours ago, so everything should be working now.

Maybe something like this explanation needs a sticky somewhere visible, but written more politely. The level of seeming naivete on both sides of the fence sometimes astounds me.

People do not understand the enormity of spammers they think, ah it is someone just selling viagra and knock off trainers. But that is not the case. It is so much worse than that. As the internet is not the wild west it used to be, there are laws in effect that make Wildcherry solely and directly responsible for anything that is placed on this site. Even if it is some anonymous nut job telling you the best way to kill yourself with a spoon. Even if it it is spammers offering cheap pharmaceuticals that some may be duped into clicking. That turn out to be something else entirely resulting in near fatal complications. Then you get the lowest of the low, the people that want to dupe you into believing they have fatal substances for sale. Considering people come here flat out looking for methods, just such an offer may be enticing to the gullible and desperate.. They may even want you to pay for it via Western Union. Good luck getting your money back. Even if they did have such fatal substances and miraculously sent it out. Agreeing to pay for a controlled substance and using the mail makes you in danger of some serious laws that won’t give a damn how suicidal a person is. If spammers are not responded to and shut out proactively SF will end up on an automated list that gets distributed to more spammers with automated systems. To the point you have multitudes of automated systems brute force posting and hammering the sign in process, causing it to choke up and be even harder to access by those in genuine need.

But here is the bad ugly part of it all. Wildcherry is entirely responsible for all of this. Not the other Mods not any one else it will come down to the person that has contractual obligation to the site. It will be her head that rolls and since it is her own willingness and effort at significant risk and cost to herself to maintain a site such as this. Then ten or twenty minutes of any ones time in contrast to lawyer fees and the site being closed till the legal issues are resolved, seems like a reasonable price to pay.

Granted the questions are absurd and there are better ways but I am assuming its yet another limit of this particular host. Wildcherry is doing the best with what she has got. This site has long grown way beyond its original scope and could certainly do with a bit of an overhaul. Hopefully some of these issues will be addressed when the site moves. But spare a thought for the person sticking their neck out so you have a supportive place to come to.

Thanks Adam. The reason I opted for the questions is that all the other forms of Captcha aren't accessible to anyone who is blind or visually impaired, so it's something that affects me on a personal level. I know what it's like to want/need to register for a site and be unable to because the Captchas are all visual challenges that my screen reader doesn't recognize. So I wanted to make sure the registration process is accessible to everyone. I also know the questions can be frustrating, but they have to be in order to protect the site.

Wild Cherry, can i just say here a very big thank you. I wasn't aware of a lot of what Adam said. I don't know what prompted you to make this site, but really hope you realise just how important and supportive this place is to so many people. Words are not my strong point atm, but there really aren't any words to describe my gratitude to you and the team. Thank you.

Thanks Arun. I can't take credit for making the site; It was created and maintained by someone else, and he still drops by occasionally. Lol I wouldn't even know how to begin actually building a site from the ground up, and the fact the founder of the site put the time and effort into making this site is truly amazing... and inspiring.

Okay, well still a huge thank you to you and the team. And pass on my (and everyone else's) thanks to the creator. Indeed, amazing and inspiring.
