There are armies I planned to conquer
    one man marching, unarmed
a diplomat with a heart attached
industries I had a mind to
core shake, rattle to the bone
    that I alone
    would revolutionise
    Books I almost wrote
    and published
    novels to jar open minds
    A piggy back promotional tour
    I would enjoy (not endure)
as I basked in the attention
    I paid myself in tones
    Anal retentive
    In nature

    Alone I would sit
    in a corner somewhere
    foppish fringe, reading
    with a writer’s air
    giggling maidens would
    encircle and pout
    there’d be not a doubt
    that the brilliance of
    my throwaway gestures
    would leave them quivering
    in a line dance of
    weak at the knee pleasure

    yet my intentions I deemed
    too precious to see
    to my sacred treasures
    I alone would be privy

    not to be sullied, pawned
    or, heaven forbid, realised
    a gifted man wrapped
    in a wonderful disguise

    an orchestral symphony of music
    dying quietly inside.
