The coronation

I’m interested to hear what other think about the coronation. I’m watching it now and I can’t quite understand the whole importance of so many items which are supposed to be symbolic. The whole thing feels very materialistic. Charles looks like he is going through the motions but at times looks a bit bored and awkward. Idk. I’m watching because it’s a historic moment but I don’t think I feel any connection to it. Just as an aside, did he have his hair cut before the ‘big day’? He could have had his eyebrows trimmed certainly!! Just feels a bit pomp and ceremony for no reason.
Im feeling a bit low, so maybe my interpretation is blinkered, seeing everything through tinted glasses. Nothing feels positive perhaps. I do wonder just how weird the human race actually is sometimes. Anyway, just me and my interpretation.

I agree in that I don't think it's important, but I also don't think Christmas, birthdays and sporting competitions are important either. However many people like these things as they unite people socially so fair enough. I always find it odd how I have to justify why I don't like these things when I feel other people should justify why they do.

I think it's important as an event to unite the country even for a little bit. Kind of like when we Americans swear in a new President. A honeymoon of sorts. Then the real work begins.

just spent my day photographing anti royalty protests (it's my job) so can tell loads of people are divided. the major vibes (in Wales at least) today was that sure, it's history, but it's also super out of touch with current situations with climate and cost of living etc

I watched it. I'm not overly royalist, I can take them or leave them. But it's a moment in history and probably the only coronation I'll see.
I find it quite ironic that during the ceremony he held the "rod of equity and mercy" which is supposed to symbolise freedom and equality while people were being arrested outside for peacefully protesting about the royal family.

I wonder if they had the rod of equity and mercy when they were locking people up in the Tower of London! Wonder if Henry 8th also wielded it, he didn't seem very merciful. Fortunately a lot of it is symbolic these days but in the past the monarchs had absolute power. I can deal with a bit of pomp and celebration as they do try to do some good and King Charles has done a lot of good things over the years.

Ziggy is right traditions and ceremonies unite people. It creates respect, civility order and control. The pageantry creates adulation and continuity. But as so many here have said, royalty is outdated and we have evolved from idolatry. Yet people still idolize others. It looks like the royal families are also tired of keeping their status with appearances etc. however who would want to give up their vast wealth and privileges? Life is a series of challenges isn’t it?

Totally agree. I feel very angry at what has happened to these people. And I'm not sure that I would have been out protesting myself but they certainly should have the right to.
