I wonder if it's just me seeing it this way, but I find the way society is going towards the future the earth is not going to be a great place to live.

Just looking at all the facts (and maybe they are exagerated because of the news). The population is growing exponentially every day, and there wont be a slowdown, so the world is going to get more and more populated every year.

Because the population is going up, violence and other illegal activity will be more noticed. Ie, say throughout history there is a 10% rate of crime... 10% out of 1 million is a smaller number than out of a billion. All im saying is that it's inevitable it will be more noticable as the world grows.

Societies moral beliefs are degrading. There's a lot more people now that arent religious for instance that used to be or who's families were. There's also just their moral beliefs, like i look at cases like: Locket's case, or what Aquatica1 said about it might be for giggles, or even that one video that was posted that had the guy who committed suicide on webcam for all to see and they encouraged him on. I also saw a news clip of an old man hit in the streets in the states by a car, and others saw it take place and kept walking. Plus you really dont even have to look far to find tons of jerks, a*holes, and others of that nature out there. I mean, just think about how much people get hurt from those people. Plus there's all the bullying, rape, and other crimes.

Finally there's all the environmental damage being done and cruelty to animals. Im sure it doesnt seem like a lot... but it isnt really plastered all over the news... the bilge dumped by ships, the rainforests being destroyed, waterplains being cleared away. It just seems that people dont seem to care about that, and that money is the only thing that drives this world. If it wasnt for money, noone would do it. Only reason there are recycling companies is because of the money they can make... it's not because they care about the environment. Just seems the higher up you get and more greedy you get, the less you seem to care really. Just another example of societies moral's dropping.

To be honest, im actually afraid of the future and what is going to happen in it. At the rate society is changing at the moment, it's hard what's going to come next anymore... if some war is going to be started up, if some bio-engineered plant is found to be cancerous... who knows. Ive seriously debated even not having children of my own for the simple fact that i wouldnt want them having the future that seems to be comming. I mean really, what has society done to itself?

I also dont really see any way things are going to improve either....

Anyways, enough blaber from me...... thoughts?

I agree with a lot of what you've said. Drugs is another huge issue which I'm SO against and every time I go out I see more and more people using them - it's getting out of hand!

I've thought about it a lot and eventually realised that all I need to worry about is me and my friends - worrying about the world on the whole makes you crazy because you have no control over those things.

Maybe some things will improve with more knowledge and better technology? I guess that's the beautiful thing about the future - we can never really predict it...just hold on tight!

    We're living in 1984.
Maybe 2012 will be the end.
It certainly seems like this is a pretty fucked up place to be.

Don't worry about the population going up. We could pack all of the world's population in a relatively small area, if we lived in the same population density as places like New York and Seattle.

Also, remember that crime can be eventually managed. I believe that violent and petty crime is actually on the decline (at least for most Western countries), and any increases can be explained by the economic recession more then anything else.

Morality is something that I think would decline anyway. Even withholding my own disbelief in God, I believe that these declines in morality and religion are leading to something good: Rationality and Reason. These two thoughts gave us the Enlightenment, which arguably bettered the human condition more then any other era in history.

Will there be jerks out there? Unfortunately, yes. But now we don't stone them for being jerks, and I believe that this is an improvement.

So far I've disagreed with you on most issues, but I do agree with you about the environment. Something needs to be done with the condition in which we live.

And guess what? There is something being done about it.

Nuclear, wind, solar, geothermal, and tidal energy are now being deployed on scales that have never been seen before. Hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles, and alternative fuels are also being deployed on scales that have never been seen before. The cost for everything I've mentioned is dropping like a rock.

It doesn't address the core problem, which is greed. However, it does mean that the environment problems are being dealt with. You can help, by voting with your wallet.

The future is scary. I'm all with you there. However, I think the future is going to be righter then ever. Technology is going to make our lives better then you can ever imagine.

Yep, but unfortunately after Hitler holocausts are looked down upon and the problem isn't likely to correct itself.

I don't think anything ever changes. We might be running into a Malthusian trap with the population and the planet, but we'll have to see what happens. I'm still convinced that technology can carry the day, but there does need to be political will. Morals, crime, everything else is completely constant.

People have always lined up to see executions back to Roman days and probably before. Schadenfrade isn't going anywhere, but it's nothing new.

lol, yeah. hitler was doing such a greaaaaaaaaat thing with that wacky holocaust. youre right, we could use another 1 nut egotist like hitler deciding who does and does not get to be gods. hell, i mean, seemed like he was sooooooo successful with that, couldnt hurt to have another

    gimme a break

dont worry about society. if we cant learn to loosen up, and stop popping kids out like its a contest, then we deserve all we get. as for "thinning the herd", thats sociopathic to the fullest, and the last thing we need is the sociopaths deciding who lives and dies. its like having butchers running a cattle preserve.

There have always been and always will be things like that happening and you could always find a-holes and jerks everywhere. Because of the media and the interwebs you just hear about those things happening more often. Im even pretty sure there used to be a lot more rapes in the past since women in many cultures were treated like dogs :D

I think we have done a pretty good job considering that a little while ago we didnt even know what morality and social beliefs mean. You are forgetting the positive things

I agree, the world is so overpopulated, its disgusting! I can't really see any solution though. We could all stop making babies, that would be a step in the right direction imo.

OMG people you all are so ignorent....
Its a realy long article to write about life and all this shit
so ill just say it shortly:

Western coutnrys require cheap labor force to keep its engines running
cheap labor force is usally built from unaducated people who struggle to servive
who are ready to work really hard and recive almost nothing for it.
Not everyone can accept this way of life, some turn against the goverment
that in fact using them, and they are trying to free themself from its chains.
wich naturaly results in criminal activities.
Now the goverment is NOT intersted in improving the life quality of thos people
because if it will, it will loose the fuel source of its ecenomy.
(who will work in the dirty factorys? who will clearn the garbage?)
So the goverment build jails, with them the goverment recive 2 things:
    1. people who commit crime can be removed and forgotten
so that they will not "infect" others.
    2. psychological prassure on people to NOT rebal against the rules.

    now about population issue:
most of the western countrys suffer from negative birth rate
while eastern countrys got possitive birth rate
one day it will result in a plant scale flip of the domminant socitys.

Anyways, you guys should learn some more before building your opinion
about the world... THERE IS a reson why i support socialisem

You say this as if it's a bad thing. Religion has done so much bad for the human race.
  12. lost43215

    lost43215 Well-Known Member

I think it's done so much better overall. I mean, sure we dont know how things wouldve turned out if it wasnt for religion, but just looking at human nature... i think it did a big difference. I mean, humans have a lot of violent and selfish qualities which i think without religion way back when we were still a younger race... we would be in a worse position. I think we wouldnt have the morals that religion has taught us (whether or not you are religious, you have to admit our moral foundations originated from religion). I think we may even be pretty barbarious.... with lots of colonies all over the world, and war reigning amongst them all. Idk... Im sure if humans as a whole were more caring and less selfish my mind would change and the world would be in a way better off position. In fact, i think majority if not all our problems wouldnt exist is most humans weren't selfish or violent. But as it is, we have a ton of problems in this world that I dont really see getting any better.

As for those too that say technology will help us in the future... that maybe true, but the only reason said technology is going to be created in the end is because it's profitable.... i highly doubt they care for underlying reasons. Also, technology will only go so far..... And as for the population... ya, there maybe differences between growth rates around the world, but overall the population is going to keep growing at an enormous rate. Once we're done on this planet, we'll prob build ships to colonize another (ie mars, like they are looking at now, or the moon). And yes there are good people in this world... but im looking at the human race as a whole... and have to say based on what it looks like now and the way things are going.... I dont think it will get any better... Tbh... im actually afraid of the future and what it'll be like...

First, the religions that exist today were not the same religions that were practiced several thousand years ago. Some of the most barbarous events in human history were directly attributed to ancient religions. From human sacrifice, to stoning, to mass executions, and even entire wars, religion was one of the main driving forces of what we'd consider "Barbaric practices" in the world.

Second, the most "advanced" Western societies were relatively secular at the height of their power. The greatest thinkers in ancient times from Socrates and Epicurus, to Empiricus. All of the practices that we'd consider immoral (Killing someone for their beliefs, as an example), were directly attributed to religion.

Third, our understanding of the modern world through science, and by extension our modern views of morality, came through the Enlightenment. The Enlightenment was a period that emphasized humanism, which encouraged people to be good for the sake of being good, not because they feared a God.

Most of our modern day morality came in spite of religion, not because of it.

and you have an issue for " being called hateful "
you are obviously desperately trying to be " controversial " or have some big time hatred going on. either way it is kind of pathetic to make that statement. your hate will only rot you inside

Whether morality came from religion or reason, it seems like both are being abandoned in favor of emotion and the worship of autonomy. Morality is ceasing to be the dictates of an authority figure, or what your rational mind has decided; it's whatever you feel it is at that point in time.

with chemical weapons and weapons of mass destruction kiss those rising population levels good bye. Also the 'third' world is growing at a huge huge rate but the western world is rapidly shrinking.

Religions come and go, expect a few new ones to pop up sometimes soon..

People are always going to be people though and a thus so mean there's good and bad, also you can't like everything soliloquise; hate is as much apart of life as love.

Now day's a persons genetic make-up can be seen by relatively simple tests so good luck hiding if/ when ethnic cleansing happens again which it always has happened throughout time, not just Hitler...

I dont know if it's just me, but the point i got from his statement was that without someone performing genocide, then the world's population will continue uncontrolled. Basically i think he meant just someone in general... and altho hitler was racist... i think he meant hitler in a general term cause to me, he's most known genocidist (tho im sure there was worse).
  19. Issaccs

    Issaccs Well-Known Member

No Hitler was by far the worst on the general scale of things.
Diverting resources from a countrys industry purely to dispose of what we're mainly an undeserving, hard working population of people based solely on the paranoid bullshit of the time which blamed every wrong doing on the Jews other than the real causes.

But your right in that the point I was trying to make is that unless their is a radical reduction in world population things will get much worse before they get better.
The world population has doubled in 50 years.
How do you suppose that we will feed 12 billion people in 2050.
    24 Billion in 2100?
Short of mass genocide, plauge or sterility things will become much, much worse before their is an improvement. With a little foresight it isn't hard to imagine a planet starving to death and devoid of all other life but humans because we shot it to eat.

The population will probably level out at around 9 billion in 2050, based on growth rates. There were predictions it was going to be 10 billion at 2100, and those have decreased since then.

There is enough food to go around too feed everyone right now. The problem is not a lack of food, it's a lack of infrastructure to distribute said food. Genetically modified crops can feed everyone in abundance, if we can get the roads, airstrips, and ports to get the crops to the people.
