    This is America

I met a man on the side of the road
Selling stories of his life for a bottle of booze.
Begging for some kind of reprieve from his life.
Such a sad, dirty man singing the blues.
I watch this man as he begs for some change.
Telling people he's just down on his luck.

I met a woman on the side of the road.
Selling her body to buy food for her baby.
Begging for freedom but bound to her life.
Such a sad, broken girl spreading her legs.
I watch this woman as she begs for some more.
Telling people it's just that one last time.

I met a child on the side of the road.
Begging for anything because they ran away.
The abuse and torment written within their eyes.
Such a broken child taken by the hands of a loved one.
The option to runaway and live on the streets better then hell.
Telling people it's this or nothing because they won't go back.

I looked at myself when I got home from my journey.
I flipped on the television and saw all the same.
I looked at the paper and realized nothing ever changed.
I thought about it all. I thought about the pain.
I thought about the tortured lives of many souls
    and thought to myself....
    This is America.
