I was on my way into town to do some shopping this morning and I saw this list printed in the Metro newspaper - apparently it's "according to a poll of the essential things for us to be happy." It goes on to say that the "average person is able to tick off just 8 of the 50."

Thought I'd type it up here for thoughts.

    1. Stop worrying about money
    2. Stop worrying about what other people think
    3. Take two holidays a year
    4. Enjoy the little comforts
    5. Experience different cultures
    6. Work to live rather than live to work
    7. Pay off all debts
    8. Be true to yourself
    9. Concentrate on what you have instead of what you don't have
    10. Use money for fun rather than a rainy day
    11. Make time for family and friends
    12. Try all types of food
    13. Find true love

    18. Help your family when they're in need
    19. Lose 6kg (1st) in weight
    20. Treat each day like it's your last
    21. Visit all Britain's historical landmarks
    22. Book an impulsive last-minute holiday
    23. Volunteer for a charity
    24. Take up a challenge
    25. Go on safari
    26. Blow money shopping
    27. Learn a new instrument
    28. Be married for longer than 20 years
    29. Save money for your grandchildren to enjoy
    30. Start a family
    31. Earn more than your age
    32. Have a pet
    33. Drive a really fast car
    34. Travel alone
    35. Keep children on the straight and narrow
    36. Meet strangers
    37. Move away from home in an unfamiliar place
    38. Have a one-night stand
    39. Pass your driving test
    40. Get a degree
    41. Rescue someone so you're a hero for a while
    42. Date someone exciting but completely wrong
    43. Get a promotion
    44. Teach your career peak by 40
    45. Have an all-night drinking session
    46. Perform something on stage in front of others
    47. Snog a stranger
    48. Plan a surprise party
    49. Embark on adrenaline-packed activities such as bungee jumping
    50. Keep young by spending time with children

Well...I've done 8. Guess that makes me the average person.

I can understand some of those things. Some are a lot easier said than done. Some are impossible for certain people. There seems to be an emphasis on doing things for yourself, which is a good mentality to have but isn't always possible given a person's state of mind.

Hmmm, some of those seem really unhealthy, like get drunk and sleeping with people you don't know. Not sure how that would help someone be happier.......

Those were my thoughts. A full, well experienced life doesn't equal happiness.

Also, it says to not worry about money yet most of the things on that list require large amounts of it.

There are some nice, positive, sensible things in the list... and then, as you've noted, some that are off the wall and probably more detrimental than good. I find that the best road to wellness is one that begins by being true to one's self. This does not mean disregarding others, but it does mean knowing who you are, where you want to be going, what you need to do to get there, and upholding those things along the way that you feel in your heart are morally right.

Happiness is not about money, or about doing "wow" fun things... though we would fool ourselves if we did not realize that money does help, while in itself not being the sole solution.

I've done some of these...lots I would want to do. Especially the travel to 25 countries, or more. I don't know about the one night stand part, but all night drinking sessions can be nice...lol.

OMG me too! The fact that it saves my details so I can buy things in less than 30 seconds does not help lol

"20. Treat each day like it's your last."

I have always truly, truly hated this one. So we should all quit our jobs and do whatever we want without worrying about the consequences?

I've done 21 items on that list. Trust me - if you're already dead inside, nothing on that list makes a damn bit of difference.

God, yes! I hate It when people say that, too. That and "you only life once." I can't imagine ever having that much energy or courage. The reality is that that sort of lifestyle is seriously detrimental.

Wait a minute. That's not the full list. Here's the rest:

    51. Hitchhike and pick up hitchhikers.
    52. Sleep outside.
    53. If you drop a piece of food on the floor, pick it up and eat it.
    54. Tell your boss to go fuck himself/herself.
    55. Masturbate at work.
    56. At your workplace, jump up on a table and strip, then encourage everyone to do it.
    57. Scratch your genital regions and buttocks in public.
    58. Eat without using knives, forks or spoons at least once.
    59. Climb steps using your hands also.
    60. During the summertime, if you're near a fountain, take off your clothes and swim in it.
