    Untitled (also unfinished…?)

    “Kids say the darnedest things!”
    remarked a clever
    and successful
    gentle and mild-mannered
    television host of the 1960s.

    Triumphant baby-boomers
    in their time
    would rather play
    with the cardboard box
    than the toy it brought,
    their bright minds conjuring
    a car, a house, a picket fence,
    a rocket into space
    and home again for dinner.

    Back then,
    boxes challenged reality
and life was what you made it

Now adults say the damnedest things
    their far-flung dreams
    just so much noise
just empty words in academic halls
    just stories from the news
    just cardboard walls

there is no car, no house,
    no picket fence,
there is no rocket home tonight.
