Glancing at it, it's nothing special
    Made of bricks and mortar
    A rope hangs down
    Down into the abyss
Just another well to the onlooker

    Stepping closer you will see
The writing engraved into the bricks
    "Death" "decay" "lost hope"
    Stand out among the rest

With a sigh and a heavy heart
    You will step closer still
    One step
    Two step
    Until you're at the edge

It looms above you one second
A great height to be conquered
    Only to change the next
To be spiralling down beneath you

Reaching out, your hands take hold
Of the rope that hangs there so innocently
    And you wonder
How many other lives has this well destroyed?

I find the best poetry is started from just a few words that are in my head, that build and build, until it's finished
