What Do You Value?

#1
What do you value the most and why? Because I think what we value or are interested in controls our whole lives and effects who we are. My top three values are the following and in order. They are also intertwined in that they are all connected with each other, and I also give my explanation of why they can never exist completely in this world.

1. Truth.
To me, the absolute most important value that everyone should have in life is truth, because any loving, long lasting society to me needs to be based on a shared, unquestionable, ultimate truth in order to work properly. I have dedicated a large part of my life to seeking out the truth and believe I would even die for it, and it also has taken a toll on me for doing so. But as they say, 'the truth shall set you free' and I don't really regret any of it in the long run, because I wouldn't want to live my life in any other way.

In society I see many who are not interested in the truth, willing to bend the truth to get some desire, or run from it every chance they get. And many times the truth hurts, especially one's about yourself that you may not want to believe. But I think it's healthier in the long run to do so, and why would anyone want to go through life being a fraud or living an alternate reality just because you don't like or can't handle the real one. Be yourself, be real, be honest, what do you have to fear or to lose that's more important? But instead we live in a world/society that is built on a foundation of one lie leading right to another for all sorts of reasons, and as long as everyone has their own version of what the truth is which is what has always existed, a lasting peaceful life for all will never exist. Which brings me to my next value;

2. Fairness/Equality
Imagine life being completely fair, that everyone had maybe different but an equally fair chance in life to achieve what they wanted or needed to do, wouldn't that be great? But instead, we have pretty much the complete opposite in life; special circumstances for some, some get all the opportunity in the world, some get a little, and many get none at all. No chance at all.

This is why I'm not impressed with how many medals someone has, how much they achieved in life, awards, pretentious attitudes and actions, etc, because it's meaningless to me if they got the opportunity to do so and others didn't. Now maybe some worked hard and they are proud or glad of what they accomplished, and I say great. But it doesn't make someone any more or less important than the next, do you know what I mean? Someone who is the president or the person who cleans your toilet or does the jobs no one wants to do should be equal in the eyes of society, but we don't have that here because many don't see it that way. And also, fairness/equality can never exist in this world completely by its very design, because we have limited resources here and not enough to go around to compensate all the needs of everyone. I think it was purposely made that way to, causing us to fend for ourselves because that's what's happening. I don't see that ever changing. And going to my last value..

3. Humility
I wish more people valued humility in the world. Many see it as a form of weakness or cowardness, but in reality it's a form of kindness. It's the opposite of pride, greed, self importance. I try to take the view of going through life of being very humble except for when I shouldn't be, which does not happen that often. Give someone else something even if I don't have it myself; I don't need to be first, I don't care if I'm last, hell I don't even care if I finish at all. Why? Because in a rigged system that was unfair from the start I don't really see the value in any superficial gains such as money or fame, it's meaningless to me. And actually, I think it can be bad for someone to be too successful for their own good as it leads to other things like greed or false pride. To a certain point I'm glad I didn't get certain things in life that I desired at the time that would've probably not been good for me. But again, it seems like the world is not designed to promote humility, it seems like a dying practice to me because survival in the world forces one to be the opposite of humble to achieve what they desire or need. In other words, your life will probably be physically worse or harder if you choose to have a humble attitude, and again I think it was purposely designed that way.

Anyway, those are my top values and my opinions about them. What do you think, what do you value, why? Thanks for reading

My top value is probably love. That could mean romantic love, platonic love, love for a pet, etc. I believe we need love almost as much as food. My second top value is probably gratitude. We should be grateful for the good things we have and the bad things we don't have. There was actually a study that shows that starting a gratitude journal is one of the quickest ways to get yourself out of a depression. We take too many things for granted like the air in our lungs and the food on our table. We should thank God or the Universe or whatever you believe in for everything provided for us. My third top value is probably respect. I believe a lot of people use the word "respect" not really knowing what it means. We should treat everyone with respect whether or not we share the same beliefs, gender, race, orientation, etc. This is a pretty good thread. Thank you for starting it.

A sense of honor, sense of rectitude. Behaving in how a person believes is right. It can be quite varied depending on region: country, customs, culture, religion for each, but most places do have ideas of right and wrong that are universal if no other reason than people would never function together without them. Crimes against property and people are examples otherwise people would just steal and murder and you end up with chaos. Tolerance is the third one. Live and let live and each person goes their lives as they please.

For me, there are several sub-values/categories within each of these values.
Example: respect = truth, equality, honor n such. There are so very many that i personally lump them all into respect, because to me without respect you don't have those other items. That's how i tend to look at this type of thing. Can one exist without the other?
(Music has it's own because.... well... it's Music!)
Sorry if that doesn't make sense.

On my opinion, as to why for each... because without these, you can't truly know happiness. You just exist...

Good answers everyone. Like I said I think our values, beliefs, and interests make us who we are. And whoever someone chooses to be(if it is indeed a choice), then that's what you should be in the fullest.
