this isn't mine, it's my uncles
but it's on poetry.com so i don't think he'd mind it being on here

    What's the point?

It's the sharp end of a needle your finger feels when you prick it,
The gesticulation of the umpire at the fall of a batsman's wicket.

It's a definable spot in space, a measurement on a scale,
A definite moment in time, the tapered end of a nail.

    It's a unit of scoring, a particular place en-route,
The directing of a gun when about to shoot.

It's portrayal of character, indifferent, good or bad
They told me that it was 'rude to do it' when I was a lad.

It's the mechanics that help a train to change track,
The dot in decimalization we adopted way back.

It's a mark on a compass, the climax of a joke,
The part of the pencil that tends to be broke.

    It's a versatile word that's used quite a lot,
But at the end of each sentence it's only a dot.
