The grey emptiness apparently stretches all the way to the ground beneath your feet
And i realise there is no love in my heart for you but only for the picture i have of you
I’m sitting in a hotel room, measuring time with tv programmes
And i realise that poetry only exists for people who live on the outside of poetry
Do you see the future as a corridor of years, lying before you, no longer an amorph myst of wrinkles and passover rituals
Do you see the boredom of every day to come
And the impossibility of what even death cannot offer -
The final turning point, on every day to come
Then you’ll only see flesh that softens in the sun
And clarity which disappears into the mouth of a red worm, day by day
And you’ll know that what you thought of as your heart is nothing but your stomach
Well then, gather all the pain from the past
And melt it into one sweet dagger
There are shadows in the light, wait there
    For your enemy – life
The day will come when you will stab that pale chest.
