council tax

Right now I am freaking out, my worst worries and fears have come true. My partner has just received a summons for unpaid council tax, and we are scared and don't know what to do. I've been constantly fearful that I'll lose them and that they'll get into trouble..now its getting even closer to that.

They have a meeting with a financial debt charity before the summons, we're hoping that will help.

I'm in the States so I'm not 100% sure what this means but I gather it's not good. Seems to me you can't do much if it's a court situation but hang tight and see what happens at the hearing, yes? Try to be cool and see what goes on there. Is there something you can do in the mean time to change or effect the turn out of this?

Hi @Jack D im in the U.K. so I know what you mean. I think you'll be ok. I had to go to court for non payment of the 'Poll tax' so yeah it was a long time ago, but it was a case of figuring out a payment plan so they were getting the money I owed them.
It took ages to pay it back, but they didn't throw me in prison or anything.
You're doing the right thing by seeking financial advice, I hope they can help you out.

Hang in there, let me know how you get on

Don't panic. I get that it is scary but this happens to so very many people - the court will put in a payment plan and they won't ask for more than you can afford. As long as you are willing to make payments, nothing bad is going to happen to either you or your partner. I am glad you're talking to the debt charity - it is good to have someone on your side. Please don't worry too much - I know its hard but honestly, nobody is going to get in trouble or go to prison. You're going to be okay.

Remember most companies or in this case governments want their money. No matter the amount. I am sure it will go well, and the charity should be able to help sort things out for you two. Just relax and move through the processes. Not like you will be tossed in a debtors prison.

These people are only interested in setting up payment plans.

If you don't let them know of your financial situation, that's when they think you're ignoring them, and they pass the debt onto the bailiffs.

It's far better to tell them you can only pay £1 a month, rather than waiting to receive a summons or worse, 2 burly bald bastards at your front door

Hi I'm from the UK and recently I missed one payment and they sent a threatening letter to me. My husband has been out of work for 7 months now and it is all down to my salary to cover bills and general living expenses. Is turning out to be impossible. I wrote and explained to the Council that I will need to split the payments over 12 months instead of 10. I caught up with the payment I missed, thanks to a family member. Haven't had a reply from them so hoping no news is good news. Hope everything gets sorted out for you and your partner, which it will
