I was sitting here thinking about, "What is something you are dreading about the future, what is it that you don't want to face in your life again and again?" and one of the answers that came to mind was work. As soon as I have another day off, I instantly start dreading my next day, but not for doing the job itself, it's because of the people who work there that don't care.
The last place I worked at for 13 years I have never seen so much entitlement, from all different ages and backgrounds. "That's not my job, I don't/won't do that, that car doesn't have a radio I won't drive it, I blame the first person I see instead of who actually is causing it because it's convenient, I'll break work equipment without telling anyone, someone else will fix/deal with it." And this attitude sucks and is completely draining on those who don't do this. And it can be found in just about any job, the type of work usually doesn't matter.
While I can be sympathetic that they are probably going through some personal pain in their life, and sure, work isn't fun for anyone, but what these people don't understand is they're making everything harder than it has to be for everyone else around them by doing this behavior. If you don't show up to work for a poor reason, or you break something being careless, or don't do what you are supposed to be doing at work, somebody else still needs to pick up the slack and get the job done. This isn't about butt kissing corporate America, it's about giving a damn what your co-workers around you are going through because of you. And the same could be said about any number of things in society: If you litter, someone else has to pick it up. If you don't care about your kids, then someone else will have to. If you vandalize something, someone else has to pay for and fix it. Nothing is free, there's a price to pay for everything whether you see the consequence of it or not.
Managers who enable bad behavior just because they don't want to deal with conflict are also a huge part of this. If they won't back up their good workers when they need to, then the bad workers have already won and will continue to bring the workplace down with their behavior. A good manager needs to know when you need to step up and take care of something and not just ignore the situation until it gets worse. Do I like conflict, do you think I like doing the sh*te jobs at work because no one else will? Of course not, but I have a sense of how my actions or inaction has an effect on those around me, and I care about it. Like I said, this same problem is in the world in general; When one more person decides they don't care when they could, it makes things that much harder for those who do.
