Practical Advice Frustrated with Apartment - Where to go From Here?

So basically my apartment has a lot of issues. I currently have 2 holes that they cut in my ceiling trying to find the source of the leaking that is causing significant amounts of water (3+ gal) to pour out of my ceiling all at once. I'm trying to figure out what the best solution is for now. I'm hoping to figure out if it's possible to break my lease due to the maintenance issues. My friend from CR is wanting to get a 2 bedroom that we could live in together, because she really needs out of her living situation. Does anyone know anything about breaking a lease for maintenance not getting done? And what do we know about finding a new apartment after you've broken a lease? I'm so frustrated ugh. I'm in Iowa. I have a call out to a renter's rights agency in my city, but waiting to hear back.

UPDATE:
They referred me to IA legal aid. IA legal aid said to submit an application. I did. We will see what happens

I hope the legal aid people will be able to help.

I think generally it's good to collect as much evidence as you can for whatever you claim. So maybe some videos or pictures of the leak.
