How to know when to respond to someones thread

#1
If there is already a threaed about this then my bad, I couldn't find it.
I make a lot of posts and respond to people in the ones I make, but when I see a thread where I feel like saying something suddenly everything I write is too self centered and dismissive and reductionist. Because of that I feel like I have to disclaim or preface everuything I say, but I don;t want my validation seeking or insecure personality to be too obvious when I'm trying to support someone or just talk about their issues. I draft a lot of replies and end up deleting them.

For me, I always appreicate what people have to say even when I don't agree or find it helpful (it's not very often I feel that way about someones reply anyway.). I just worry that assuming others have the same perspective a myself will lead to me doing something seriously out of line despite my intentions.

Then again, I feel like I get so much out of this forum and I can't help but want to contribute a little. Maybe that motive is a little selfish but I don't feel like thats a bad thing.

I also feel like always posting and never replying makes me more alienated because all the interaction is one way. Ive been a part of several forums and I always leave in the end because I don;t feel like there is any point to my presence and no one seems to know me despite my being active all the time. I really do feel like learning how to participite in other people's conversations is important where do I find the confidence to do something like that.

If anyone else has found themselves at a similar hurdle I'd like to know how you overcame it.

Here’s how I dealt with it: I let people speak whenever they want to. If someone has nothing to say—that’s fine, I accept that.
In the end, we end up where we enjoy spending our time.
And yes, if you’re not getting kicked out (banned), then you’re behaving acceptably. They just don’t have anything to say in response. Let it be.

Hello. If I read your post correctly, you are feeling like you take and don't give back to the community here.

Here is the wonder of SF. It is here for whatever you need at the time. SF will listen, support, and give hope for however long that is needed. Then, ideally, at some future point, you become well enough to add some support to others.

For me after like 20 years here, it is a combination of giving support and getting support. I still have bad days/months, etc. and need support, and probably always will.

Words are a slippery, tricky thing, if I have misunderstood you, please disregard these late night ramblings of mine.

Be well as you can be!

Commenting in posts is similar to in person IMO

I, too, have found myself deleting what I initially typed because I have to remember that it is about the one who posted, not about me.

However, it is okay to reference an experience briefly to help the reader understand that you’ve experienced something similar. And often that empathy is what help the readers resonate with the advice/ triumph / commonality.

Words matter. So responding with phrases like:
‘in my experience’
‘ saying some people ….in stead of saying you …’ etc.
