Hooterville, more of the Green Acres version rather than the Petticoat Junction one, although the three Bradley girls in the town water tower were wonderful. I am a typical guy at times. I loved the completely far out and off the rails idea of Green Acres where folks talked to the credits, understand the oinks from Arnold The Pig and other zaniness that made that show off kilter.
For a less wacky one I would pick the setting for the old sci-fi story Lest Darkness Falls by L. Sprague de Camp where a 1930s polymath type in sciences, languages and history finds himself in 6th century Rome at the time of the various barbarian wars. The plot device for the transport is that time weakens at points and people fall backwards and forwards. He know that the time period is the onset of the dark ages and having to find a way to survive and make a living with an eye to halting or lessening the effects of the dark ages so he introduces such things as: the printing press and with it modern books and newspapers, distilling wine to brandy which makes him tons of money because although folks claim it is like drinking fire it gives them good buzz, semaphore towers to increase communication and the transmitting of information, double entry accounting and Arabic numbers.
