Worthless

I feel like I don’t deserve to exist. I feel like I deserve to be in pain. I have made terrible mistakes and have never amounted to anything throughout these years. I feel like I deserve to punish myself for the way I treated people. I feel like a failure that doesn’t deserve anything good. I feel like I am not allowed to be happy because I failed so many times and failed so many people. I feel like I don’t deserve to improve my life because of how poorly I’ve been performing at it for the last 22 years. I feel like I don’t deserve anything but to suffer and dwell on what I did wrong in my life.

I'm sorry you're feeling this way. It sounds like you're being really harsh on yourself. A lot of members here seem to be very self critical and blame themselves too much, maybe that's true about you too.

You're welcome to say more about what you think you've done wrong if you'd like. Maybe it's not as bad as you think?

I wish you could take a step into starting to believe that from this day forward there is possibility that you can feel deserving. It's so hard to learn when you've had a challenging childhood in the mix, I get it...... What I do know is that punishing yourself, dwelling, and feeling guilty does not ever do any good in any way for you or anybody else and it sounds like you've done enough of that. The past is the past, it's over. Isolating has its harshnesses too. I was so glad to see that you are into art and creating it.....is there a way to create with it at this time as well as spend some time in this forum? I agree with Seabird completely. Many of us, including me, spend some amount of time here daily or frequently for support and it can make a difference. Hope to see you around..

I’ll try my best to explain the key things that I think about when it comes to my wrong doings. Some situations are a little harder to explain than others.

First off I didn’t do well in school growing up. I didn’t handle my finances well growing up. I wasn’t productive enough. I feel like all of that goes to show just how useless I am. I feel like I am dead weight that has no hope for resurrecting. I wish I could have done better in those aspects. I feel so much shame for not being good enough.

Second, I’ve treated my friends poorly. Throughout 2023 I lost many friends because I decided to act like a complete idiot. I had many confusing feelings about my friends. I felt like they were better than me, that I didn’t deserve to be around them, that they secretly didn’t like me. I doubted if they truly cared about me. These feelings stirring up inside me left me with a lot of envy, shame and inadequacy towards my friends. And so it lead to me having multiple breakdowns towards friends. I would angrily lash out on them multiple times. I said manipulative things. I used self harm as a way to get attention. I threatened them with suicide. I crossed boundaries. They would tell me to stop but I didn’t listen I just continued complaining to them and acting awful. It got to a point where they completely stopped talking to me which is understandable why they did that. Pushing all of my friends away has left me with immense shame and guilt and I feel the need to punish myself all the time for how I treated them. It hurts losing them because I’ve known them for so long. I feel like I deserve to be in pain for what I did to them.

So yeah those are the key things I think about when it comes to my wrongdoings. The situation with my friends (or I guess I should say former friends) eats me up the most because of just how badly I made them feel, I feel like I just straight up bullied my old friends.

A lot of people don't.

You're not really expected to be productive or handle finances well when you're a kid. Please be gentle with yourself.

It's certainly possible to be mistreated by a friend group. It's hard to tell if they were actually mistreating you or you were just projecting your insecurities on to them.

The lashing out and suicide threats don't sound good, but it also sounds like there were forces that you couldn't control, or had a hard time controlling pushing you in that direction. I don't know if you're able to contact any of your former friends, but an explanation and an apology could go a long way.

I should have mentioned this in my previous reply. My friends did nothing wrong to me, they were supportive of me all the way through until the days we stopped talking. So I can say with 100% certainty that I was projecting my insecurities onto them. I am unable to contact them again, some of them have me blocked and others haven’t answered for months.

I think you should forgive yourself for all of this. You weren't really in control, and you've tried to explain and apologize. You've done all that you could reasonably do.

It's unfortunate that the relationships are broken, but it's pretty common for relationships to get broken sooner or later, or to just drift apart.

I wish I knew what I could say that would help. I have also been where you described. Somehow I managed to keep my friends, but boy did I screw up my work relationships. That seemed to be where my trauma based anger showed up. All my friends were angry too, so we had that to keep us together.

Sometimes, what helps me is to be seen, meaning not just noticed, but also understood, and possibly even appreciated. It’s rare, but it does happen. I think it’s a basic human need. What works for you may be different. It could be useful to look closely at what are the human needs that you are missing presently. Usually much of our misbehavior comes from unsuccessful attempts to get these needs met, but in the wrong way.

I can also nearly guarantee that looking too long at the past is going to make one miserable. There’s a saying that we can look back at the past, but don’t stare. Learning from past mistakes is one thing. Marinating in coulda/shoulda/woulda thoughts is another. The latter is going to increase pain more often than not.

Another danger of too much past focus is distorted “if only” thinking. If only I had a new car, the right partner, etc. Then I would be happy. Wrong. I have managed to achieve most of my “if only” desires, and now I’m miserable with more stuff. If my pain is independent of external factors, then maybe contentment is also available within. I don’t know; I haven’t been able to do it yet. Simply recognizing that my past focus is harming me doesn’t help me live in the present.

I don’t know. I feel like I should stop here and see if any of this resonates with you? In the meantime, please know that you are worthy of the same dignity and respect that is inherent to all people. This is unconditional, meaning that it doesn’t depend on your actions. Therefore, you are worth being cared for, ESPECIALLY by yourself. It’s good to be nice to oneself. So please take good care of yourself in the meantime.

Wow this is some really great advice. Ever thought about writing a book? Haha. But in all seriousness thank you for saying all that, it’s much appreciated.

LOL you are not the first person to suggest that. However I think that we already have too many books on the topic of mental health. I can’t imagine what I could add, so pretty much I just discharge my hypergraphia (writing too much) on webfora and Reddit. I’m doubtful that the latter is terribly healthy.

:D

I am glad if anything I said helps, though!

Hello somewherefaraway, I can understand your feelings. I think it is great that you have an awareness of the fact that you may not have treated your friends well. There are so many people much worse than you who never think they did anything wrong. At the same time, don't be so harsh on yourself. When you have personal issues it is just difficult to function well in relationships (I know what I am talking about).
It is a pity you lost your friends but that can happen. I think maybe you can find some new friends and maybe with some support from a therapist try to make the new relationships work better and last longer.
But especially, don't say you don't deserve anything but to suffer. Everyone deserves to get a second chance if they are sorry for what they did and want things to improve... There are so many people out there who do wrong consciously and intentionally and still live a comfortable life without remorse. Where would be the justice in that?
