Answered wrong to someone at work

Someone at work I've had good short costs w/ asked me if I'm sick. I said "yes, but it's not contagious."

I didn't þink. I had lied. I should've said, "no, just down."

I lie. On impulse. Why?

There are a set of things that people generally find socially not acceptable, so if you feel like there is something generally not socially acceptable about yourself, of course there's going to be a natural tendency to lie to protect yourself.

I guess it would have been better to say you were down, in so far as you might help establish a real connection with her, but you had to make a decision on the spot, and most people pick the safest option when they're on the spot.
