Yes. . .(but I can't remember many/any of thme, at the moment~precise*)ly^_; )
I bleive it was Spike Lee who said, that he approaches his documentary films,
just as the same way i nwhci che does the regular, more standard, (whatever you call them?)
jmjovies! :^_D =admittedly, some of them, are on subjects, or people whom I already
knjow a lot about, and so, not the greatest^ -or best, to be recommending (necessarily!)
if it's your introduction to the topic--unless you don't care all so much, about being lost~*>
I know you've seen the one on Kubrick, that dcame originally in his box set, after his passing.
Then there are those others I've mentioned recently, and had ben available on next flix
as of, a few years ago: one was called Film Worker, (I believe?) & was perhaps by Leon Vitali.
The otehr, his helper, or assistant (personal) Emilio. Both, if yo're fans of his, great 7 brilliant_
The fellini one, is the one that's coming ot mind, as being, kidn of confusing as it's all montages
of shots/cuts from his films (w/o any or much explanation) & then somme more recent, or current
aw os of when it was made ~03 circa, maybe? interviews with actors & others who've worked with him.
I loved it, I just can't remember it's name. And it is too far away (ot3ehr side of the room ) & to hard to find
(buried under one of the stacks of others/ dvd's & such!0) :-D I THINK; it might be called, A Born Liar. . .
Yup, watched that one, a lot during the -08 recession, alonge with Ikiru, among others He has a book,
sort of a semi-autobiography (know that's not what htis is), b/c it stops with Rashoman. It's in the nearbgy
University Library, and is called, I belive, now i've lost it?!? I had it, typed that other out... *& it's gone, like
Kyser Sozier. Or something: that's it! Somthing like, an autobiography; in it, he euqates, the cinema to
beauty & essence. Or the essence of cinema, is cinematic beauty, I think. Nick Drkae had one made about him
around the turn of the centruy. Perhpas by a Dannish filmmaker, not English, KI don't believe, but very excellent
& well done. Now I'm blanking on the anem. but ther haven't been all that many, if you're interestted. And yes,
in particular in your question, with how well one of these can be made. It's not just static, boring vhs looking
tape running through the camera, while people sit there, in a chiar, looking bored as can be. Reading off a telepromter
or pre-scripted, dry & martinin humored ill sounding, soliloquy. Back to Stanlhy(s' doc) muentary; his b.il. jan, forgetting
his title, if it was exexutorive procudee but h'ed worked with him since forever & made it. The one in the box=set
recetnly I saw weher he'd said, or maybe it was from before, that you could'nt just inclued everything you'd wanted to
for it would be too much (too many intercut interviews of peoplel talking, one after the other, after the other, et cetera).
Because people would tune-out / kind of like w/this text/drivel/drudge/sludge-ery. But so he hade to eliminate a lot
fo waht he'd wanted to inclcude, for the sake of timing pace tmepo things like that & etc. Or people woudl sotp listening.
I thin,k, or I believ that, he couldn't get Bergman (Ingmanr) to agree to do it, and interview for one reason or another.
Maybe he just didn't fel comfortable for not having known his work wel neought to speka on camer a aobut a doc
on his life, however. that is just a guess. AS you may know, S. K. was a huge fan of his, when he was, well nevefr mind, lets' not
keeep going. For hat is enough, and surface~scratched!*>_
