Anyone ever been prescribed olanzapine? What were your experiences?

#1
I was recently prescribed 5mg of olanzapine on an as needed bases for self harm impulse and I am really afraid to try it since I have blaring tinnitus and I don't know how it will effect that until I try it. Meaning that I don't know if the olanzapine will make the ringing worse in my ears. With that being said I have been having really extreme impulses lately and I'm considering taking the gamble and trying it. Has anyone here taken olanzapine? and if so what were your experiences?

Do you have a history of medications making your tinnitus worse?
I understand just asking around about others experiences for into gathering but we're all so different that there's no way to tell how that'll affect YOU personally. There is some antedoctal evidence that olanzapine might make your tinnitus better, though, not worse. (according to google)
In my opinion it's worth a shot to try it and see how it affects you before pushing it aside.

Hi there @saoa

I've checked through the summary of product characteristics for olanzapine and tinnitus/exacerbation of is not one of the listed adverse effects. So it's unlikely that it could have a direct impact.
From what I understand, stress levels can be a trigger in some cases for tinnitus. So perhaps with any luck, trying the olanzapine would help to provide a more stabilising effect.

How people react is obviously an individual thing. It may help some but not others, some may experience side effects, others won't etc. It's worth a try especially if it can help. Of course goes without saying to report any adverse effects you may experience to your doctor or pharmacist.

Good luck anyway, hope it helps you.

Hi Saoa, I was on olanzapine (Zyprexa) for a year. I didn't have any changes to hearing or anything that effected any of my senses - sight, hearing, taste... Although olanzapine did effect my balance and some other things. https://www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-1644-9274/olanzapine-oral/olanzapine-oral/details. Walker is correct that there is unfortunately no way for anyone to predict the symptoms you will have if you take it. However, my doctor was always willing to change medications if I couldn't tolerate the side effects. However, the most important thing is to talk with your psychiatrist. Make a list of questions and call your psychiatrist to talk about your concerns. Then you will have feel confident in taking the medication or getting another one.

Hello, @saoa I happened across your thread doing a search on this site with the word tinnitus. And the reason I did a search is because there are other people on this site suffering from tinnitus. I cannot speak to the effects of prescribed medication because that is a thread all in its own. But how is your tinnitus?

Please believe me that my heart goes out to you,

Been taking 5mg Zyprexa. Low energy and weight gain have been problems but it absolutely works as intended and stops intrusive unwanted thoughts.
