After high school and before college, i spent a year at home - for the most part alone with my psychedelic mind. It was during that time (approximately) that my mother i guess started getting back to her roots. She’s Russian, half Jewish, half Russian Orthodox, albeit not too religious from both sides. Yet she had a fascination with Russian Easter Eggs and had begun researching and buying materials to make her own. It was at that time too that i was more earnestly finding a college to go to, and allowing my psychedelics (non drug induced) to move into a more coherent dissociation for the life ahead of me. Off to college i spent the first year as a freshman in art college; went home at the end of the year, but returned to the midwest early to find an apartment for the sophomore year. I did not know - i guess none of us knew at the time what else was brewing in my mom’s life. pancreatic cancer.

it was in March of my sophomore year that i was called home, for - as my father put it “the worst”. It was. I never watched her making the eggs and sadly i don’t think any of them survived over the years - they’re so fragile. These are made with unbroken eggshells with no more egg inside! But so intricate in design - such a careful dying process. The picture below will give you a pretty good idea of how hers looked. I do hope making her own brought her satisfaction in a life that i know was a lot of torment as well. Though making them got interrupted with her illness, do think they made her happy.

i’m happy i have a memory of these easter eggs today and one egg in particular that she had prominently displayed in the kitchen for a few years. So though, bitter sweet, it is a fond memory of my mother and how easter has played a part in my life.
