Empathy Only Grappling with suicidal thoughts

#1
I've reached a different level of low. Yes, ever since I was 14 I've dealt on and off with suicidal thoughts. For a long time, I couldn't decide on a method (won't mention any here), so basically never did anything or attempted anything because I couldn't bloody decide ! xD typical indecisive me. Anyways something triggered me really badly last Friday morning, and in my state of distress I ordered something online to hurt myself with. I did end up cancelling the order the day after, and I credit that change mostly due to my online support group - everyone was so kind, nobody was patronising, everyone just treated me like a person and it just meant so so much to me. it was a free service, and people were just kind, just because. Anyways, I really appreciate how they were, and i decided to fight my suicidal impulses so cancelled that order.

This week in therapy, it was a friday session and it felt like friday couldn't come quickly enough. I had so much on my mind. I told the therapist about the ordering from before, and how badly I felt. I was afraid she'd just pick up the phone and ring a hospital etc but she just asked me if I was going harm myself soon and I said no (true at the time). I told her at the end of the session that even though we were trying to just do fortnightly sessions due to financial reasons (she's fucking expensive), i told her for my own mental health I think i needed to go back to seeing her weekly. She agreed and asked me would I be okay financially and honestly i wasn't really, but I felt uncomfortable saying no so i just nodded with a yes. since then I've been thinking and overthinking about that issue around the cost. Part of me fears if i ask her to go lower and she refuses, that I'll take that personally and think she values money over my welfare , especially since she knows how low ive gotten. Part of me fears if she does go lower, she will provide less quality care than before since I'm not worth as much to her anymore.

I do think I will ask her if she could charge less, it would make a difference to me financially, it's not even like I make a lot of money from my job and i do have rent to pay now. I just worry about little things.

Last night I started thinking about killing myself again, all this suicidal ideation, so i picked up the phone and rang the national suicide hotline for crisis and self harm. I got a trained therapist professional, and I felt uncomfortable blurting out how bad things were immediately because I didn't know this guy , so i spent the first while on the phone talking about something related but not as bad. I did notice he started talking really slowly, enunciating his words like I was some sort of invalid or a child, but I trusted him, i just wanted to place my trust in somebody. Eventually after about 19 minutes he told me that he'd identified I wasn't self harming, or in a crisis and that he'd have to wind down the phone call so he could provide their proper services to other people ringing.

I felt really hurt, it was kind of like that saying where people kick you when you are already down. I got really distressed because i was vulnerable and tried to reach out and i was basically fobbed off. I ended up going on the chat here to pm and cry to people . I rang another helpline but they were full up so i had to wait for a third helpline to open, they opened their phonelines at 9pm, i rang in at 9.01, and i was bawling down the line at 9.02. and bless this girl who answered, she didn't know what to say ( that's okay), but i appreciated so much that she gave me her time, and that she wasn't trying to get me to hang up. I spoke and cried to her for about 30 mins before i felt embarassed and ended the call. During that initial state of extreme distress from the crisis hotline guy, i reordered that thing from last week to hurt myself with. I felt worthless, and i felt there was no point in trying anymore. After I finally did get through to someone on the other phoneline, and after speaking to people here in chat who gave up their own free time just to keep me company, i felt a bit worthwhile, and once again, made the (big) difficult decision to cancel the order. again.

i feel like for the next while at least, its going to be a whole grappling with life, a whole ordering and cancelling situation. i started making plans last night, and then eventually canceled them. I'm not going to lie, i don't think i have much to live for. i am alive for other people- because they would miss me, they would be sad etc. nothing is really in it for me. I know myself - i am a strong, resourceful young woman but i also have a stupidly fragile psyche. the world is hurtful, its too loud and it's not made for me. i know my challenges going forward. I am not confident in my ability to ride through them.

im having a few drinks tonight to take the edge off. not too much, but just enough to numb the pain at least for a few hours. nothing helps enough. i need more support and don't have it. i try to do my best but living is just so tiring and it's just so hard.

This is just my story.

first and most important you are a worthy person that should get any help or comfort that you need, you are a good person. as for the guy on the crises line it sounds like you held back, i don't blame you , i understand. since you held back he didn't know how much you were hurting. i hope things get better for you soon. please feel free to use my inbox to talk anytime about anything

@bubblebear - maybe your therapist asked you about the financial situation because she was willing to work with you on the expenses. In the US at least, all of the therapists I have worked with who don’t take insurance (aka the skilled ones) have a sliding scale that adjusts the rate they charge based on income. Just a thought. I would like to reply to the rest, but I’m not able right now. Suffice to say that I’m glad you are doing constructive things.

Hi. Your story really struck me. I don't know you, but I really hope you know that you are worth fighting for. I hope you can continue to live. It's so sad how you feel about yourself and I hope you can find a way to pay for your therapist. It sounds really important for you.

Wishing you the best. Please continue to talk here 👍🏻

Hey guys,

(Typing on phone)

I was a little embarrassed I bared my soul out so I didn't respond for a while. I am doing better. Multiple people have been kind to me throughout the week and I have had little achievements on my end. Despite the last two weeks being quite difficult, there were multiple times I was proud of myself for certain things. One of them is slowly being more assertive.

I saw my therapist yesterday and it was a tough and heavy discussion because I was telling her about having placed the order a second time (which I cancelled too). It will take time to process such a heavy session and I was quite exhausted quite early yesterday despite having had a technically "short" day.

I'm on the way to work now, mummy is driving, bad traffic en route so I may be late but I will ring in to let them know if needed.

I didn't ask the therapist yet about reducing the costs, I decided I had too much other stuff to talk about and I will discuss it next week instead

Thanks for your responses guys.

Hey you. I do not think a therapist would give lower quality in session just because you cannot affort the normal paying. But if you really fear this to happen this should be a thing to open up about. The best thing to strenghten the trust between you and your therapist. Needs courage, sure, but it could be worth it.
Hope you feel better soon.

I've gotten bad again. At the time I wrote my last post, I was on some sort of high. It lasted about 5 days.

The method that I was thinking before is out of stock online (as God would have it) . I am keeping an eye to see if it comes back in. I go back and forth between the suicidal planning. It's not that i am super eager to kill myself and I really love to do it. I just can't figure my life out, there have been multiple challenges that I face on a daily basis, therapy isn't very helpful ( I will talk to her about this this week ) , and honestly I am running out of steam. I was running out of steam for a long time so eventually you just have none left. I want to be successful if I try to kill myself, I don't want to survive an attempt, I feel the consequences of that will be much much worse, judging by how our state healthcare is.

My brother who is a healthcare professional, he had a workshop when he was still at university years back and he came home that time and told me that people who attempted were just looking for attention, and that as a punishment anyone going to hospital due to an attempt are always seen last because they were taking away valuable time and resources from other people who are literally fighting to live and would love to be alive. He said if people were serious they would do something more drastic and actually succeed. A few years ago on a holiday we saw a man attempting < mod edit - method >, my brother told my mother that that dude was just wasting people's time, and we walked away.

My brother is actually doing very well for himself. He is some sort of hospital area manager, works part time hours + gets full time pay. Bought his own place, lives away from my toxic dad, has made a new life for himself with friends in Australia. It worked out well for him. Sometimes I think it doesn't matter to have a good conscience.

@bubblebear While this may be his belief but it's based on all sorts of mistaken premises and really negarive thinking.

I wonder about the harm some of the the people in our families of origins do to us. Some of us struggle to tell ourselve a different, better story about life, but it is possible.

Please keep posting as to how you're doing. From your words I know you are a bright and big hearted person. I wish the very best. Hold out for things to change for the positive.

I'm glad you cancelled the order.

hugs, if it helps

In my experience, a therapist who offers a sliding scale is a kind & compassionate one. People with significant mental health challenges & who are in emotional distress frequently struggle financially. A good therapist will understand that. He or she won't treat a client/patient differently based on their ability to pay. That's frankly unprofessional & unethical. My thoughts.

The problem is, some here are obligated to provide it on a sliding scale, so it runs the risk of this kind of negative treatment, vs private, etc. But it varies, depending upon the individual.

Hi guys,

I have been having a better day.

There was a trigger on Monday morning, which prompted the snowballing and spiral of extreme distress, hence my post here. I am not a fan of how violently my mood changes. I've been quite careful the last few days to try avoid triggers, but we all know that life is full of curveballs and you can't always avoid them. However, for now I'm trying to keep it stable and undisturbed as much as I can.

I had rung into work last Saturday and told them I needed some time off due to mental health, so I am not back in till the 29th. I am a bit lonely without coworkers to chat to since I don't really have a social circle outside of work, but I think the break from how demanding and hectic work is is doing me good - I seem to be sleeping better in the rented house, and I am not as bothered by my housemates. Those who know me in chat would know I've had ongoing problems with noise levels and housemate issues all semester. Granted, it is nearly the holiday season so one of my housemates (who always invites people over ) is gone back home for a while, but there are still three other housemates here and I'm dealing alright with them so far, which is a good.sign

Since being off, I have been catching up on household chores, going to the gym more and the extra time has also meant I am able to slowly catch up with college. I had been neglecting my assignments all semester because my job takes so much out of me even on days off, so it's good to have the time and energy now. I am hopeful to pass.

{ For those who would like to know about the sliding scale with therapist - she did eventually reduce her fee a little, not a lot because she said she still needs to earn a living, but her fee now, although not 'cheap' is actually more manageable. Our agreement was that I'd pay the lower fee for now and when I feel better financially that I can tell her and go back to the higher rate. I haven't noticed a change in how she treats me since lowering the fee }

I have deleted the browsing history for the SH method I was googling, I don't need the reminders. I don't feel suicidal right now, but I am also aware things and my mindset can change very quickly, and I am a little scared. I feel bad that people here have to talk to me when I'm happy and then my mood can suddenly plummet drastically. It's not easy for me, but I think it's not easy for others either.

Anyways, for now I am better. Thank you to those who took the time to respond, I appreciate being heard.

Plodding along for now,

Thank you
