Empathy Only How to Forget Someone

I feel ashamed about this, but I still check my ex bff’s social media pages because I still can’t let her go. I found out that she’s currently in the country that I’m going to with my university, the same city no less. I’m heartbroken. This could’ve been something that we’d share together, but i decided to cut her off, and now we can’t. I still check her page to see any updates even though i know it doesn’t help at all.
Today I also called my dad, and he was talking to me about plane tickets and mentioned a layover in a city near where my ex bff lives. He asked me if I knew anyone there that I could visit since the layover was long enough. I hated it. I imagined that if we were still friends, I would’ve jumped for joy and said that I’d try and meet her, but i couldn’t say that. All I could say is that I’d have to talk to another one of my friends if she lives near there (I do genuinely have another friend near there). It just sucks. I want to forget her. I want to stop looking at her accounts. I want to text her. I want to be friends again. Tell her I miss her. Tell her that I’m sorry. This was all a mistake. I don’t know. I hate this whole situation. I wish I never checked her account that day to find out she’s where I’m going. why am I like this. Goodbye. Thanks to anyone who’s read this.

Hey Meow - I am sorry you're going through this. Peopke underestimate tge pain of friend breakups I think. You say you cut her off - do you still stand by the reason you did that? Sometimes we have to cut friends off to protect ourselves from toxic behaviour. Sometimes we cut friends off because we are in a bad place and make bad decisions. Do you want to share why the friendship ended?

People really do underestimate friendship breakups. I still stand by the reason I cut her off. We were friends for about a year and a half until she randomly cut me off for her own reasons. No talk with me. Just a sudden text that we’re not friends anymore. She texted a couple months later to say we might be able to be friends again, but later in the conversation she decided that we still can’t be friends. A few months after that, she told me that she’s ready to be friends again. I didn’t really care. At that point, I was completely apathetic to everything because of her. She cut me off again like two months after us being friends again.
I wrote a memoir about her the next year.
About a year and a half later (from when she cut me off the second time), I start feeling lonely and missing her like crazy, so I text her again and ask if we could be friends again. She said yes. Our friendship lasted almost two years. I started to question our friendship, though, when I reread the memoir I made about her. I showed it to my friends, and they said that she treated me really badly and suggested that I cut her off. So I did. But I did it in the worst way possible. I did it the same way she did. I didn’t talk to her. Just a sudden text that we’re not friends anymore. I regret it. It was an impulsive decision. I wish I had just had an honest conversation with her, even if in the end we still weren’t friends. I feel such a lack of closure. I miss her so much. I really want to talk to her again, but I know it won’t help me. I cut her off to move on with my life. What if I bring her back in and decide that I want to move on again and leave her again? I’d be no better than her.

Good afternoon,
I agree with what's written above. People take breakups in romantic relationships much more seriously. Although often it's completely unfounded.
I sympathize with you deeply. I was in a similar situation. I stopped communicating with my friend. But I continued to check her social media like some kind of masochist for about two years.

I hope that someday we can remember former friends with a bittersweet feeling, but not with pain. I wish you peace of mind and harmony.

Thank you for your support. It’s nice to hear I’m not alone in what I’m going through.

It will take a while, but the pain you feel will eventually go away. It hurts so much to lose a friendship, but give it time and these feelings will go away and you will move forward in your life.
Thank you for this comfort. It means a lot. You’re very sweet *hug
