From 2015/16 - 2024 I battled with severe suicidal thoughts, depression and crippling anxiety. I suffered from anhedonia (found no joy in any activities) and felt trapped and hopeless. I truly believe I would eventually take my own life, or just lay in bed hiding away from the world, rotting in bed until I died. I would sleep at 4-5am and sometimes wake up 3pm,
I was 102kg (225lbs) (which is obese for my 5'9 height). I had no confidence, no motivation for anything, and hated myself and my life. My anxiety and panic attacks was so bad to the point I could not even do simple things like walk to the grocery stores without feeling nervous and panicking being around crowds. I had negative views on the world and people in general, feeling negative judgement and hate (which was all in my mind). My diet was awful and I was drinking alcohol on a weekly basis to numb my pain.
Beginning of journey (one year ago)
One year later, I am 82.8kg (182.5lbs), all my symptoms of anxiety and depression are almost completely gone (I may have a day where I feel down once in a blue moon. I am more confident and able to go out in public with ease, and I enjoy socializing with people and building positive connections and memories. My love and passion for lifting weight and boxing has returned and I look forward to every gym session with excitement and enjoy every second, and have made many great friends.
Here is the changes I made to my life to make this possible
-Fixing my diet -by far the most important contributor to my improved mental health in my opinion. Junk food actually increases risk of depression and there is scientific studies. I recommend a diet with high protein like lean beef, chicken, fish, and lots of foods high in fibre, such as wholemeal bread and brown rice. Cut out or severely limit fried foods, soda, candy, alcohol etc.
-Fixing my sleep. I started my sleeping 30 minutes earlier, then gradually working my way up. Now I wake up 5:30 am every day with ease.
-Reaching out on here, and to friend and even strangers. Most people are nice, you don't have to bottle your thoughts and fight through this alone. Sometimes a listening here or a hug can really change your mood for the good.
-Supplements - I took fish oil, vitamins D, B, multivitamins, as well as magnesium glycinate and also ate lots of fruits and vegetables.
Meditation - I suggest searching up on youtube - Music to boost serotonin and dopamine, and then just listening to it to calm your mind and focus on deep breathing 15-20 minutes a day
Finding a hobby, or something you enjoy to occupy your mind - I know its hard when you are depressed, but working on a hobby or something productive, like sports, is much better for your mind than laying down and dwelling on suicidal thoughts every day.
If I can do it, hopefully you can too!
Good luck all
